NORTON - Devin Askew and Dave Billotte combined on a five-hit shutout as the Norton High baseball team earned a postseason berth with a 1-0 victory over Harwich on Tuesday afternoon.
With the victory, the Lancers improved to 10-8 overall. It is the first tournament appearance for Norton since the 2003 season.
"Now the guys can relax the next few days," said Norton coach Dave Mollica, whose team had failed in two prior attempts at their 10th win. "This was a great game to win, especially against Harwich."
The Lancers scored in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Corey Hatch reached on an error. Travis Jolly and Sean Ryan followed with consecutive singles. Mike Borroni then hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Hatch.
Borroni had made a nice defensive play in the top of the inning to keep the game scoreless. With the bases loaded and one out, Borroni got a ground ball, stepped on third base and then threw to catcher Rick Travers to complete the double play.
The defense also helped out Askew earlier in the game with a couple of nice plays. With a runner on second base and two outs in the second inning, Ben Hastings made a nice catch in right field to squash a rally. The next inning, Askew surrendered a double and a stolen base with one out. However, the Lancer pitcher then struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
Askew got the first out in the top of the seventh inning. However, he then surrendered a single and went 2-0 on the next batter. Billotte came in and got the final two outs. Travers threw out the potential tying run on an attempted steal of second base. Billotte then retired the next batter to end the game. It was the first save of the season for Billotte.
Norton will complete the regular season with a Tri-Valley League home game against Millis this afternoon.

Wayland 11, Foxboro 0
FOXBORO - As soon as the last batter was retired, Foxboro was already trying to forget about their loss to Wayland at home. It was that type of day for the Warriors, who couldn't get anything going at the plate and struggled in the field as Wayland put the game away with five runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Foxboro (10-8) is already headed for the MIAA Division 2-South tournament with two games left in the regular season. The Warriors will be hosting Falmouth today and Stoughton on Thursday.
Wayland's Richardo Sullivan held the Warriors to just four hits, two by Foxboro outfielder Kevin McCarthy. Darryl Jeannetti and Brad White both had doubles for Foxboro. Senior Ed Bernstein went four innings and was tagged with the loss for the Warriors. White pitched a 1-2-3 top of the seventh inning, recording two strikeouts.

MARLBORO - Assabet Regional pushed across its game-winning run in the fifth inning on a squeeze bunt to nip Tri-County in a non-league game.
Both teams traded four-run, first-inning rallies with four hits. However, the Cougars (3-14) then went scoreless through the next six frames. Tri-County was retired in order in the fifth and sixth innings, but had the leadoff batter on base in the seventh.
Jeff Biocchi was hit by a pitch and pinch-runner Sean Roche then stole second. After a sacrifice, Tri-County had the potential tying run at third base, but that Cougar was picked off.
Tri-County gained the lead in the first as Joe Hopkins singled and Brendan Dorian drew a walk, scoring respectively on a Greg King base hit and a Chad Todesco double. Mike Gouthro cleared the bases with a two-run triple. The Cougars return to action today at home against Holbrook.
