Feehan baseball clinches tourney bid




ATTLEBORO - The Shamrocks are in! Producing eight runs in the sixth inning, the Bishop Feehan High baseball team scored a 17-5 victory over Middleboro Thursday at Beach Field to qualify for the MIAA Tournament.

Shamrock senior shortstop Greg Hopkins drove in seven runs with three hits, two of which were doubles as Bishop Feehan improved to 10-9 overall, heading into today's regular season finale at North Attleboro.

The Shamrocks had a 4-0 lead after three innings and took a 7-2 lead after four innings before the Sachems (16-4) touched Bishop Feehan's Brown University-bound senior righthander Martin Finn for three runs in the fifth inning.

The Shamrocks used eight hits in that sixth inning uprising to score eight runs with Hopkins smacking a three-run double. Matt Boulter and Evan Cuce both had RBI-doubles in the spree.

Boulter, the Shamrocks' promising sophomore, unloaded a two-run homer in the third inning among his four hits on the day to give the Shamrocks a 4-0 lead. Feehan had taken the lead in the first inning as Devin Cornetta drew a walk, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a Hopkins ground ball.

The Shamrocks stretched their lead to 7-2 with three more runs in the fourth. Cornetta and Lucas Gagne both singled and scored on a double by Hopkins, who scored on the same play with an errant overthrow.

Dighton-Rehoboth 6, Wareham 2

WAREHAM - Nate Koneski notched his eighth mound victory of the season, scattering six hits without walking a batter as Dighton-Rehoboth beat the Vikings in a South Coast Conference game. D-R improved to 16-3 overall, 14-3 in the SCC and can gain a share of the SCC title with Old Rochester if it beats Case in its final regular season game, Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.) at home against Case.

Colby Torres, Jared Pinto and Greg Steele each socked two hits for D-R, while George Agostini belted a two-run homer in the first inning.

Koneski retired 12 Wareham batters on strikes and picked off a Viking runner in the second. Otherwise, Wareham had runner on base in every inning.

D-R took the lead in the first on Agostini's home and then made it 3-1 in the second. Koneski and Andrew Martel both drew walks and Torres lined a one-out RBI-single. In the third, the Falcons went up 4-1 as Steele doubled and scored on a Pinto base hit. Dighton-Rehoboth 210 011 0-6 10 3

Seekonk 4, Fairhaven 2

FAIRHAVEN - Colby Andrade tossed a complete-game, three-hitter as the Warriors knocked off the Blue Devils in a South Coast Conference game.

Andrade surrendered two runs and three hits, while striking out five batters and walking two. He improved to 4-2 on the season with the win.

Seekonk took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a solo home run by Cody Callahan. The Warriors increased their advantage to 2-0 in the top of the second when Jeff Olsen scored on a fielder's choice grounder. Brent Medeiros also scored on a fielder's choice grounder in the third, pushing the visitors' lead to 3-0.

After Fairhaven cut the deficit to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the third inning, Seekonk scored in the top of the sixth. Bob Jeannotte scored the team's fourth and final run on a passed ball. The Blue Devils scored once in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-2, but Andrade closed the door from there.

The Warriors collected six hits in the game with Dan Charest contributing a single and a double. Seekonk, now 8-13 overall and 7-11 in the conference, will travel to Fall River to face Bishop Connolly in a non-league game on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
