ATTLEBORO - Jackie O'Neil and the North Attleboro High softball team survived a few scares from the Bombardiers of Attleboro High before prevailing 2-0 Thursday in the non-league game.
O'Neil scattered five Bombardier hits, but Attleboro had runners on base in every inning but the first. O'Neil, who walked two and struck out five, avoided danger in both the second and seventh innings when the Bombardiers had the leadoff batter on base in each frame.
In the second inning, AHS freshman Devin Azulay belted a leadoff triple, but with one out, she tried to score on a wild pitch and North catcher Nicole Hardy tracked the ball down and fired to O'Neil for the tag and second out. "We had to take a chance," said Attleboro coach Deb Carreiro.
In the seventh inning, Attleboro's Jen Thurman singled into right field as the leadoff batter. O'Neil notched a strikeout for the second out and then third baseman Steph Burns hauled in a popup for the second out. The Bombardiers' Amanda Morse lashed a line drive into right field, which glanced off the glove of North's Erin Hopkins. She picked up the ball and fired to second base to cut down the AHS runner for the final out of the game.
North touched Attleboro freshman hurler Devin Azulay (three hitter, nine strikeouts) for its go-ahead run in the first. Burns reached base on a passed ball, stole second base, went to third on a Brenna Johnson fielder's choice and scored on Toni Zagami's bunt.
In the third, North created a two-run lead. Johnson stroked a leadoff single and scored on a two-out single into centerfield off the bat of Hardy. Azulay then retired the North side in order in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
North Attleboro (7-11) will entertain Bishop Feehan today and has a makeup game with Sharon yet to be rescheduled. The Bombardiers closed the campaign at 5-15.
