Truck driver escapes injury in I-495 crash

NORTON - The driver of a pickup truck towing a 40-foot car carrier trailer escaped injury in a collision on Interstate 495 Wednesday in which the trailer became separated and landed on top of the truck.

Glenn Vincent, whose age was not available, of Hanson, managed to crawl out of the sunroof of his heavy-duty Ford F-350 pickup, which rolled over on the northbound side of the highway about 9:15 a.m., fire and police officials said.

The accident occurred near the area of the North Washington Street overpass. The enclosed car carrier trailer was empty at the time.

Vincent told police he was on his way to pick up cars when the accident occurred.

Trooper Thomas Murphy, a state police spokesman, said the pickup truck slowed for traffic, when the trailer began swerving out of control and contacted a UPS truck. Murphy said no charges would be filed in connection with the accident. The driver of the UPS truck, whose name was not available, was not injured.

Police had to shut down the left and middle travel lanes of the highway for about 1 hours, Murphy said.

Norton fire Lt. Benton Keene said a 90-gallon diesel fuel tank also became dislodged in the accident and leaked onto the highway. The leak was contained by firefighters using a chemical absorbent.

Trooper Kevin Collins investigated the accident.

" With the increased horsepower of pickup trucks and the fact that no license is required has led to abuse of a loophole in the law. A pickup truck can now haul a 40 foot trailer with ease even one that's loaded. Since the law says that the license required is dictated by the vehicle doing the towing, any 17 year old with a license could haul a 40 foot trailer with 20,000 pounds of cargo as long as it's a pickup truck he's driving and not semi-tractor rig.
