The name of the book is...

I can't tell you. Or they'll whack me like a lasagna-stuffed Soprano.

I'm referring here, of course, to the 1ABC project in Attleboro - 1 Adventure, 1 Book, 1 Community.

The idea is to get everyone in the city to read, and talk about, the same book this fall. There is a whole calendar of events planned.

They haven't publicized the name of the book yet - that could happen as soon as Tuesday - but I'm a well-trained, experienced, probing news guy, so I found out.

Of course, I am also on the committee that helped pick the book.
And how did you like those clues for that contest we ran in the paper? Weren't they brilliant?

I thought so, and I'm the one who made them up. I especially liked that "ambystoma maculatum" one.

We've picked a winner in our contest, by the way, but we can't announce who it is until the 1ABC gang goes public with the book's title.

But I can tell you what it isn't.

Those of you who guessed it was "A Clockwork Orange" by Anthony Burgess were wrong, as were the entries for "The Time Machine" by H.G. Wells.

And it isn't "Phantom of the Opera" by Gaston Leroux or "2001: A Space Odyssey" by Arthur C. Clarke.

It also isn't "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley," or "1984" by George Orwell, or "The Martian Chronicles" by Ray Bradbury.

I was most intrigued by the entry "Beneath a Marble Sky," the novel by John Shors about the building of the Taj Mahal (not the casino). I had to look that one up.

Curious minds will just have to wait. Copies of the book will be distributed to high school students tomorrow as part of their summer reading assignment and then the word will be out.

Be encouraged by the fact that most of you who entered our contest to win a $100 gift certificate to the Col. Blackinton Inn guessed right.
Let the fun - and the reading - begin.

Thanks for the papers

Kathy and Gerry Hickman of Attleboro are back from a trip to Scotland, notably to Bridge of Allan, home of their friends and a small, quaint town "reeking of history" on the outskirts of Stirling.

"We spent three weeks on the isle," they write. "Our friends are parents of the groom whose wedding we attended" at a 6th century abby. The bride, they note, is a descendant of Robert The Bruce. There were "flying kilts everywhere" at the wedding party.

"Toured Mill, Skye, Iona and Highlands," they add. "Dramatic beauty through mists, cold and wind."

"Don and I just returned from a five-day trip to Anchorage and environs for the National Ducks Unlimited Convention," writes Laura Oullette of Attleboro in a note with a copy of the Anchorage Daily News. "Alaska is awesome. This was our second time there, and it was just as impressive as our first visit.

"We saw a snowy owl in Alaska! Beautiful!" she says in her note card with a snowy owl pictured on the front.

See you next week.

Thanks to G.J. and Joan M. Provost of Attleboro for a copy of a paper from Binghamton, N.Y."Stopped here on a weekend trip to USPA convention in Independence, Ohio," they write.

Thanks for the cuddlers

Thanks for the pink teddy bear dropped off anonymously for Bears on Board.

Bears on Board is a program of the Attleboro Area Council for Children. The bears are given to local police officers, firefighters and ambulance crews to give to children in crisis.

Our teddy bear total to date is 4,924.

See you next week.
