ATTLEBORO -It appears that Attleboro Art Museum will be the owner of an Alexandre Iacovleff painting a little longer.

Although the painting was set to be auctioned off in London on Tuesday, published reports indicate the painting was not sold.

Sotheby's lists the results of its Russian art auction on its Web site - but the results do not include the Attleboro Art Museum's painting, called "Under A Kirghiz Tent." Sotheby's said any painting not listed in the results was either withdrawn, passed or unsold when the list was compiled.

It was estimated that the painting would bring anywhere from $800,000 to $1.2 million, which the Attleboro Arts Museum planned to use the proceeds to maximize its offerings and provide items such as art lectures and classes.

"Under A Kirghiz Tent" was donated to the museum in 1957 by W. Charles Thompson, a North Attleboro resident with connections to the Boston's Vose Gallery. He knew the artist personally and donated another painting called "Afghans" to the North Attleboro School Department. North Attleboro has not decided what to do with its 7-foot by 10-foot painting, which Sotheby's has said could sell for $800,000 to $1.2 million. While the school committee has voted to sell the painting, the final decision rests with selectmen, who have not discussed the issue yet.

Selectmen Chairman William Moffitt said board members are still meeting with donor's family to discuss options. He said a decision is likely to come before Sotheby's next Russian art auction, which is scheduled for October.

If the painting is sold, the school committee is recommending that the proceeds be placed in a trust fund to support fine arts and music programs.
