More patrols in city

ATTLEBORO - Police beefed up their patrols Sunday in the downtown neighborhood where an Attleboro teenager was shot Saturday afternoon, as investigators continue to search for clues into the bizarre incident.

Police say Jared Betts, 18, was shot in the back in broad daylight as he walked along Morey Street around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. But Betts' injuries were light enough that he then walked the half-mile from the shooting scene to Sturdy Memorial Hospital, from which he was transported to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

After being treated, Betts was released from the hospital late Saturday night.

He then returned to the crime scene with detectives to show them where the incident had taken place, police said.

Betts told police he recalled seeing a black Ford Taurus in the area at the time, although he had no reason to consider it suspicious.

Investigators talked to alarmed residents of the residential neighborhood around Morey Street on Sunday, but turned up few leads. Detective Arthur Brillon said that he and his colleagues continue to think Betts was not targeted, but rather in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Brillon said concerned citizens should stay calm but alert. "We always ask residents to be vigilant to what's going on in their neighborhood," he said.

Detectives continued to ask that residents with information on the shooting contact them by phone at 508-222-1212, or online at www.attleboropolice.org by clicking on "Tipster Online Submission" under "Quick Links."
