The route

East to West: Allowing for meanders through back roads, the Smiths will start from Chuck’s house in Coventry taking Rte. 6 West through Rhode Island and into Connecticut, picking up I-84 and traveling into New York. They’ll pick up I-80 in Pennsylvania and stay on that highway until reaching Iowa, where they’ll use I-29 as a cut through to I-90. They’ll stay on I-90 until reaching western Montana when they’ll then pick up I-15 into Idaho en route to I-84 to traverse Idaho and Oregon. From there, they’ll pick up I-5 traveling north into Washington and to Vancouver.

West to East: They’ll start heading east again on Canada’s Route 1, or the TransCanada Highway until reaching Montreal. They’ll complete the trip by traveling south on I-89, then I-91 through Vermont. Chuck’s ride will end at his home in Coventry, R.I., while Charlie will continue on back to Plainville.
