Manhunt follows traffic stop

ATTLEBORO - A routine traffic stop turned into an extensive man hunt in the Dodgeville section of the city Friday when a motorist fled police.

Police said the driver sped away when police tried to stop him for failing to halt at a stop sign.

He eventually abandoned his car near the city swimming pool in Dodgeville while children enjoyed a summer dip in the water.

Police Detective Sgt. Arthur Brillon said police later identified a suspect, Dennis Bourdeau of 712 South Main St., and have obtained a warrant for his arrest.

Brillon said the incident started when police attempted to stop a green Oldsmobile on Thacher Street about 11:30 a.m., and the driver fled.

Police at the time had reason to believe the license plate on the vehicle was stolen and did not know who was driving the vehicle.

Police chased him down County Street, across Tiffany Street, down South Main Street and into the parking lot near the swimming pool across from St. Stephen's Church, Brillon said.

The man eluded police on foot.

Brillon said an "extensive" search was conducted with the aid of K-9 patrols from the state police, but the suspect could not be found.

He said Bourdeau is wanted for failing to stop for a police officer, driving to endanger, possession of stolen license plates and operating on a revoked license.

Brillon said the search was extensive because when the initial incident occurred, "We didn't know who was the operator. We really didn't know why he was running. Whether he committed another crime beside motor vehicle violations," Brillon said.
