Market revival well received

Wayne “Capt. Hawk” Homer of Swords, Songs and Moor shows his sword and lets Ollie Gemba, 12, of Attleboro, and Tyler Zarembovicz, 12, of North Attleboro, try it out Saturday. The sword show was just one of the many attractions as Attleboro’s now-defunct Wednesday Night Market returned for one day at the Attleboro High School athletic fields. A Hottest Act in Town competition, classic cars, foods, crafts and dunk tank were among the other features. Mother Nature also cooperated with a sunny and warm but not brutally hot day. ATTLEBORO - Saturday's one-day weekend revival of the 11-year Wednesday Night Market festival was declared a success by its organizers.

"It went very well," said Attleboro Area Chamber of Commerce President Jack Lank, who along with Lisa Daly-Boockoff organized the day-long carnival on the Attleboro High School athletic fields. "The public comments that we got were very positive."

The event's highlights included a talent show, food vendors, a dunk tank and a classic car display. It raised money for The Arc of Northern Bristol County, a local non-profit group that advocates for the disabled, and specifically for The Arc's "Give Us a Lift" capital campaign, which is collecting funds to install an elevator in its new Park Street facility.

Hears calls for revival

Lank said he hears often from residents who'd like to see the city revive the Wednesday Night Market festival, which from 1995 to 2005 turned Attleboro's downtown district into a carnival ground each week during the summer.
He left the door open to holding a second daytime "Wednesday Night Market on Saturday" this September, and said it's possible some version of the festival will return in 2008.

Lank, who said Saturday's event was "like old home week," is a big fan of the idea himself.

"It is a community event," he said. "It lets people see each other who you don't see on a regular basis."

He also thanked NationsHeritage Federal Credit Union, Labonte's Auto School and The Sun Chronicle for sponsoring the event.
