Crowd rolls to meeting on Norton skate park

NORTON - An eclectic group gathered for the first meeting about a planned skate park to be built in front of Norton Middle School.

Organizers said 40 people attended the meeting, held Thursday night at the YMCA Program Center, including representatives from Wheaton College, the Norton Police Department, the YMCA, the Norton Parks and Recreation Commission, the school committee and school department, as well as over 30 young skating and biking enthusiasts, parents and interested Norton citizens.

Paloma Naderi, the YMCA summer intern responsible for planning the park, hosted the meeting and outlined the proposal she presented at the July 12 selectmen meeting.

During a question-and-answer session, various topics were addressed, from park aesthetics to potential issues in location, safety and community collaborations.

Audience members were also receptive to forming a skate park committee, which Naderi hopes will form at a meeting at the end of September. Naderi is still seeking permission to use the land in front of the Norton Middle School for the park site.

Selectwoman Mary Steele raised a number of questions and concerns about town liability, maintenance, the enforcement of park rules and the park's noise level at the July 12 meeting. She said the board would need to have questions like these answered before the committee moves forward with the project.

Naderi and Danielle Sicard, the associate executive director of the Attleboro YMCA, will meet with Steele, the town manager and police and fire chiefs to discuss what they have compiled and researched in response to these concerns next week.

For more information, or to volunteer on the project, e-mail pnaderi@attleboroymca.org or nortonymca@aol.com, or contact the Norton YMCA at 508-222-7292.

" I believe Attleboro does have a skate park but it keeps getting vandalized. And to Good regarding the Ice Skating, we haven't had many cold winters where ice skating was considered safe. And if you are skating on town water, the Chief is responsible. Are you guys adults? Seriously, it's a wonder if you have a brain because you don't seem to use it for common sense. "

" It's a great idea and hopefully the town get's behind it. Whenever kids show an intrest, they should be encouraged to participate at every level so that they feel it is their's. If built and supported correctly, a skate park can be as viable to a community as a baseball diamond, football field or town pool. "
