Smokers, some say, will begrudgingly pay

ATTLEBORO - Smokers may not like paying more for a pack of cigarettes, but they will, according to a handful of locals interviewed Monday night about a possible cigarette tax increase to be voted on by Congress later this week.

The tax, which, if passed, would be used to provide 9.8 million children with health care, would more than double the 39-cent federal tax on cigarettes.

The House wants a 45-cent increase while the Senate is aiming higher at 61 cents per pack.

Briggs Corner Store in Attleboro has a sign telling customers about the potential tax increase and how to petition against it but Jim Desper, an employee at the store, said most people don't mention it.

Desper, who has worked at Briggs Corner for one and a half years, says only a few people have taken any of the flyers. If the tax is passed, Desper said people will "definitely still buy cigarettes."

Stephanie Alphonse, a smoker from Rehoboth, called the tax "like making a donation."

She said because the tax is going to provide health care for needy children "it makes (the tax) worth it."

Unlike Alphonse, Paul Rodrigues did not agree with increasing taxes to provide children with health care. Rodrigues said he has worked at a company for over 25 years and still does not have health care.

Rodrigues also said he will continue to smoke, even if the increase is passed.

"Screw the taxes, we're going to pay it anyway, we're smokers," he said.

A New Zealand native who identified herself as Beverly Butterflies, agreed.

She said her country's government has added taxes to their cigarettes to help pay for its universal health care.

Cigarettes, even at the hefty pricetag of $15 per pack that she pays in New Zealand, still continue to sell, Butterflies said.

"It makes no difference how much you charge, people will still buy them," she said.

" I really think in these unsettled times congress should have more to worry about than smoking,,,,,,,,,It's time they stopped bickering and did what we put them in there to do.. "

" It appears that someone is impersonating me again by using the initials PR. If anyone would like to know, I'm the real PR and would never say that. I do post on here from time to time but it appears that someone likes to impersonate me. I wish the Sun Chronicle would allow one chosen screen name and not allow others to post as someone else "

" I really enjoy smokers who think a public beach is their personal ashtray. I can imagine a smoker screaming if I dumped a trash bag on their front lawn. "

" To Crazy, They are PUBLIC places. Cigarette smoking is legal. One cigarette will not cause cancer as one Big Mac will not cause heart disease. Second hand smoke is even less harmful. At restaurants and in theaters cell phones are distracting, annoying, and legal also, it's about who got there first. Don't stand near the smoker. If it's too smokey for you when your enter, leave. Tell the owner you won't come back, and why. The free market rules. If the legislature won't make tobacco illegal, then it is legal, so avoid it if you want. The legislature trades peoples lives for tax money, for THEY are truly addicted to $$$. "

" Why should I have to change my behavior or avoid situations because of smoke. Not smoking is the the natural condition -- smoking is not. Smoke, even second hand, harms me. Your right to swing your arm ends where my nose begins. Your right to smoke ends where the air I NEED to breathe begins. Therefore put out your butt and dispose of it properly and try being a good citizen for a change. "

" I would favor a tax on tobacco products only if the money went to pay for fire departments who have to put out thousands of brush fires each year because of a burning cigarette or cigar butt tossed from a car. --- you know who you are in the gray Ford Explorer. "

" I think smoking should be banned in all public places. Why should nonsmokers have to breath in someone elses nasty smoke? It's proven to cause cancer, so why is it allowed? "

" With anonymous's thought, if the casino gets built in Middleboro, there would be tax free cigarettes for sale. What a better calling card than "Come to out casino, gamble your money, drink for free and buy our cheaper smokes. Oh, yes you can smoke here too!" Now let's see where the increase concentration of tax dollars come from, I bet it's from some place west of Tauton! "

" Beware people!! Just because you don't smoke doesn't mean you should be for this tax hike. It all depends on who's ox is being gored. YOU may be in the next secondclass citizen tax hike. Wait until it is something closer to home, like beer and wine taxes, like higher gas tax, or dare I say a fat tax. This is social engineering at the expense of freedom wrapped in faux charity. The money that is "supposed" to help people will be quickly spent by the tax addicts that are in the legislature, used to buy commitments of campaign support. "

" Ciggarette price hike? No problem. While most suckers are paying $5 plus per pack, I am fortunate enough to get them at the army commisary for half that, and better still, have my friends send them to me from the southern asian islands for about $1 per pack. Theres a way around everything.. "
