Cutting edge of a crime wave

Attleboro - Police in Attleboro area communities are starting to see a resurgence in the theft of disposable razor blades and razors, a popular item for sale on the street for drug money.

Area police have arrested two men in separate incidents in the past two weeks, including an alleged shoplifter who led Norton police on a foot chase Thursday night after stealing almost $2,000 in merchandise.

"You can go out on the street and sell them for $2," Norton Detective Stephen Desfosses said.

Disposable razors and razor blades sell retail for between $5 and $50. Shoplifters usually go for the expensive razors such as the Gillette Mach 3, Gillette Fusion Turbo and Gillette Mach 3 Turbo.

A packet of heroin sells now for $2 to $3, according to police. "Razor blades have been popular for a while. They are just like baby formula," Desfosses said.

On Friday in Attleboro District Court, an alleged shoplifter caught in Norton was ordered held in jail on $5,000 bail.

The suspect, Scott G. Stillman, 37, of Raynham, was arrested after a foot chase through woods and backyards off West Main Street around 5:45 p.m. Thursday, according to police.

He allegedly fled from Walgreens with a bag of merchandise after being confronted by an employee who called 911. Police later learned he had also allegedly stolen razors from CVS.

Stillman was arrested by Officer Patrick Mahoney and Officer Timothy Gariepy, who was off-duty but joined in when he saw the chase while passing by, according to police.

Two civilian witnesses also aided in the effort by pointing out a man running into the woods near the Yelle School and a backyard, according to police.

Desfosses told the court that Stillman's record indicates a substance abuse problem and that he was wanted on warrants in Stoughton District Court on charges of identity theft and larceny.

Norton police charged Stillman with larceny, malicious destruction, being disorderly and disturbing the peace.

Earlier this month, Mansfield police charged a Milford man with stealing over $400 worth of disposable razors from CVS on Route 106 and from the nearby Stop & Shop supermarket.

Michael Consoletti, 29, was also a suspect in a shoplifting incident at Shaw's Supermarket in Norton Attleboro, according to police.
