Top Headlines A hospital spokeswoman said the conditions of Danielle Cann, 15, and her sister Brittany, 12, were not expected to change overnight. In published reports on Wednesday, family members of the girls' father, Wayne Cann of Easton, said they did not know if the girls would survive. Danielle was set to have surgery to take out bone and bullet fragments, they said, but Brittany was not stable enough for surgery. Both were said to have brain swelling. In Norton, a group of young people gathered for the third evening in a row at the Cann family home at 384 Reservoir St., where they lit candles for the victims. The funeral for Elizabeth Cann, the girls' mother, has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Church at 700 Washington St. in Canton Cann's funeral will be officiated by the Rev. Bernard Hinckley, the pastor of the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Norton, where Cann was a devoted longtime congregant. The service is being held at the Canton church to accommodate the large crowd that is expected, according to a statement on Trinitarian's Web site. A wake will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home at 455 Washington St. in Canton. Cann's burial will be private. Police and the Bristol County District Attorney's office continue to investigate the crime, although little new information was released. Authorities still believe the shootings took place sometime after Saturday night, but autopsy results did not indicate the exact time of Elizabeth Cann's death. The results did confirm that Cann was murdered by a gunshot. Autopsy results also confirmed that Cann's killer, her ex-boyfriend, Robert McDermott, committed suicide and died of multiple trauma. McDermott shot himself, using the same gun that killed Elizabeth Caan and wounded her daughters, on the MTBA tracks in Walpole early Monday morning. He was then hit by an oncoming train. Police believe he shot himself just before the train crushed him. "Everything points to him as the shooter," said Gregg Miliote, a spokesman for the district attorney, and there are no other suspects. He said all that's left for investigators is to process the evidence, try to fill out the timeline of events, and pray for the recovery of the two Cann sisters. In the hours after the shooting, a Ford Aerostar van belonging to Elizabeth Cann was discovered in Norwood, where police believe McDermott left it before heading to the train tracks to commit suicide. A spokesman for the district attorney's office said investigators do not believe he spoke to anyone after he shot the Canns. Details also continued to emerge about previous girlfriends who alleged they were abused by McDermott, with some reports dating back as far as the late 1980s. In a filing obtained at Dedham District Court by Boston-based WHDH-TV, one of McDermott's former girlfriends described the abuse she received at his hands. "I know he is capable of causing harm," she wrote. "When I was nine months pregnant he threw me down on the ground and three people pulled him off me. ... I do not want him to come near me, my daughter, or even phone me. I'm afraid of him." Norwood Police also said a woman there had an active restraining order against McDermott at the time of his suicide. An assistant to the McDermott family's attorney told The Sun Chronicle that his family does not yet wish to comment on the murder-suicide beyond a statement released by the family Tuesday expressing sympathy for the Canns. No memorial service has been scheduled for McDermott, she said. Ted Nesi can be reached at 508-236-0434 or at tnesi@thesunchronicle.com. Sun Chronicle staff writer David Linton contributed to this report.

Once a person TAKES someones life...they lose ALL rights in my opinion. Also, real bold to take a stand like that and hide behind a screenname. " other side of coin wrote on Aug 30, 2007 5:12 PM: " you make a very good point. Don't put blame on the McDermott family for not getting help, unless you plan on doing the same to the friends and family of Beth. And by family, I mean adult family, not her children.
I could care less if the guy get a service or if they put him in a trashbag and throw him in a dumpster. But until you start to understand these people and dig into their behavior and reasons for their behavior, it will never get better. Someone else in another town will be having the same candle light vigil because the same thing will keep happening. " to Angry wrote on Aug 30, 2007 5:04 PM: " if all you people knew how abused Beth and the children were from Robert, then why didn't YOU step up and help??? Huh? Yeah, didn't think so.....you people come out of the woodwork claiming to be friends, be a part of the victim's lives and claim to know what was going on all for attention. If you KNEW - YOU should have done something to help. " to A Friend of Beth's wrote on Aug 30, 2007 4:58 PM: " You need to calm down. Get a grip. You contradict yourself in you posting. While I realize you're upset, take a step back and think if it were your brother who did this to someone, how would you feel then? Knowing how loving they were growing up but came into problems later on in life? Something to think about. " ANGRY wrote on Aug 30, 2007 4:58 PM: " That monster lost the "dignity" and "Respect" once he took away Beth's Dignity and Respect!!!! SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!! " Bri wrote on Aug 30, 2007 4:45 PM: " That guy was a horrible man.. i have seen that guy eye to eye and let me tell u he is scary...Those girls and beth didn't derisive the kind of treatment. They were a great family.. I love these girls there like my sisters And they will pull through.. The are very strong.I'm Glad that, that man in gone!!!! !!He disturbs me!!!!!! " Because wrote on Aug 30, 2007 4:10 PM: " he is still someone's brother, son, uncle and at one point and time in his life was a nice person and people, no matter who or what you have done, deserve to have a service for them. " To Are U Kidding wrote on Aug 30, 2007 4:09 PM: " Because he was still a human being with a tormented soul. He obviously had issues and no one to help him, no one to step in. He still deserves the dignity and respect of a proper burial regardless. On the other side of this coin, one could say that Beth should have been stronger and gotten help to kick him out. Not trying to start a WWIII here just pointing out both sides of the coin. You don't know what Robert was going through mentally. Don't pretend you do. " A friend of Beth's wrote on Aug 30, 2007 4:07 PM: " I personally hope that man is rotting in hell!! I am only sorry that he took the coward's way out so that Beth's children and her family don't get the justice they so richly deserve. And for anyone to say he was also a victim of domestic violence --well, they need their head examined!! He was not a victim--Beth and her children were--Beth's family were--but NOT him!!! He had problems--severe problems--obvious problems--his family knew he had problems--where were they? Why didn't they seek professional help for this man? Why didn't they get get some legal help to force him to get some much needed mental help? When will our legal system and our lawmakers do something about these longtime abusers? As for publishing the family picture with that "man" in it--SHAME ON YOU!!! Why not pour salt into an open wound for her children, family and everyone that loved them!! While it may not sell papers it would have been easier for those of us left behind to cope with our loss!!! " angry wrote on Aug 30, 2007 4:04 PM: " Well and appropriately put "Are you Kidding" Beth Cann was one of the most amazing human beings and mothers that I have ever have had the pleasure of knowing. That monster is a coward and deserves to rot in ..... where he belongs!!! " NAHNIE wrote on Aug 30, 2007 3:25 PM: " why? " Are U Kidding? wrote on Aug 30, 2007 2:57 PM: " Are u kidding about even suggesting that we should mourn and pray for Robert McDermott too? THat man tormented and abused those women in his life, not because of mental illness and not because he loved them, but he did it because they were the only ones supporting his butt. And when she tried to get away from him, he couldn't handle the fact that he now had to find a place to live and support himself. Don't keep kidding yourself. Good riddens!!!
