Pharmacy burglary seen work of gang

PLAINVILLE - An organized group of thieves is believed responsible for cutting phone lines and stealing a large amount of narcotics in an early morning break-in Wednesday at a local pharmacy.

The burglary of the Plainville Prescription Center at 122 South St. was discovered about 1:30 a.m. by a police officer performing routine building checks, Sgt. James Alfred said.

Alfred said he could not be specific about what was taken in the heist because it was still under investigation.

"I can say there was a large amount of narcotics, including painkillers," stolen in the break-in, Alfred said.

A small amount of cash was also stolen from the cash registers, the police sergeant said. The burglary was discovered by Patrolman Kyle Rockett and is under investigation by Officer James Rockett and Detective James Floyd.

Alfred said investigators took fingerprints at the scene.

Alfred said more than one person may have been involved in the heist because of the manner in which the crime was carried out.

There was evidence the thief or thieves were on the roof of the downtown commercial building, he said.

"It was somebody that definitely knew what they were looking for. It wasn't random," Alfred said.

The pharmacy was still able to open for business Wednesday, according to police.
