FOXBORO - Scoreless through the initial 30 minutes of play, the Mansfield High field hockey team proceeded to run arch-rival Foxboro High off of its home field Wednesday, routing the Warriors 4-0 in the Hockomock League match.
the Hornets scored three goals within a four-minute span midway through the second half, while amassing 17 penalty corners overall, nine during the second 30-minute stanza.
"It it weren't for my goalkeeper (Chelsea Davekos, 14 saves), the score could have been 10-0," sighed Foxboro coach Melissa Bordieri of Mansfield's all-out attack during the second half.
"We kept the pressure on and we got better shots, it was just a matter of when," said Mansfield coach Theresa DeGirolamo of the Hornets' offensive prowess during the second half. "We had to make subtle changes."
Kim McCarter (at 12:32) and Victoria Clancy (at 13:33) scored within a minute of each other to put Mansfield in front.
Then at 16:25, Lauren Healy made it 3-0 and with 2:05 remaining, Erin Keogh created the fourth Hornets' goal.
"They outplayed us, they out-hustled us, that's what bothers me," said Bordieri of the Hornets having possession of the ball on Foxboro soil for nearly the entire second half. "We were in it at halftime, but then they stuck it to us - they passed the ball so well."
Mansfield was masterful at maintaining possession of the ball through the second half, especially Colleen Davis at left wing and the midfielders, Sara Sterling, Bridget Davis and Keogh. Adrienne Breef-Pilz had to make just three saves in posting the shutout in goal for Mansfield.
Foxboro (3-4-2) returns to action Friday at Oliver Ames, while Mansfield entertains Franklin.
King Philip 0, Franklin 0
FRANKLIN - The King Philip Warriors generated five penalty corners and some close chances, but just could not score in battling the Panthers to a scoreless tie in the Hockomock League match.
KP goalie Erin O'Connell totaled five saves in earning the shutout with some outstanding defensive support from forwards Katie Burns and Michaela Muller along with midfielder Abby Lambert. The Warriors (3-3-1) entertain Foxboro Monday in their next outing.
