Drowning victim in NA identified

NORTH ATTLEBORO - Police have identified the victim of Wednesday's drowning in Bungay Lake as Mary Jane Brazil.

Brazil, 51, of 230 Oakridge Ave., was discovered by her live-in boyfriend, Carlos Lopes, floating in the water, Detective Lt. David Dawes said Thursday.

She was found on the other side of the lake from their home.

Lopes went looking for Brazil after he came home from work, "and she wasn't around," Dawes said.

A neighbor told police they saw Brazil about 2 p.m., paddling alone in a two-person boat on the south side of the lake, Dawes said. More than three hours later, at 5:30 p.m., emergency crews responded to the lake for a reported overturned boat and a body in the water. Police and firefighters arriving on the scene found Brazil on a dock near 93 Weona Road. Bystanders had pulled her from the water.

Police are awaiting autopsy results from the state medical examiner's office, Dawes said. She was pronounced dead at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro.

Brazil was known to regularly paddle on the lake, Dawes said.

"This is not unusual for her to be out there," he said.
