SEEKONK - Beauty worthy of a magazine cover apparently runs in a Seekonk family.
West Avenue resident Anthony Nardozzi, 23, is on Cosmopolitan's 50 Hottest Bachelors of 2007 list representing Massachusetts.
Nardozzi's sister, Cristina, was Miss Massachusetts USA in 2005.
Anthony Nardozzi will compete with the bachelors from the other 49 states for Cosmo's Bachelor of the Year award, including a $10,000 cash prize.
Voting for the six semi-finalists started today on www.cosmopolitan.com and ends at midnight Thursday.
A panel of Cosmo editors will choose the winner from the final six. The winner will be named at Cosmo's annual bachelor party in New York City on Oct. 18. All 50 contestants have been invited to attend.
Pictures of the 50 hunks are featured in Cosmo's November issue, which hits the newsstands Oct. 16.
Anthony's honor wasn't a complete surprise to the Nardozzis.
He was nominated last February by his mother, Tonia; his sister, and their good friend, Kate.
"Cristina kind of put everybody out there (by) winning Miss Massachusetts two years ago," Tonia Nardozzi said. "It's kind of unbelievable to have two kids being picked."
Anthony calls it "astronomical" the two were selected.
A 2002 graduate of Seekonk High School and a 2006 graduate of Bridgewater State College, Anthony is a full-time audio engineer for television station WPRI-Channel 12 in Providence. He also works part-time as an in-home personal computer technician at Circuit City in Seekonk and is a substitute elementary teacher in the Seekonk public schools.
When Cosmo wanted him to come to New York for a photo shoot, Anthony had to arrange one in Boston by a friend, Bobby Bimarzo of Boston Scene magazine, because he had to work.
"The photo shoot was fun. It was pretty much laid back, relaxed," Anthony said.
He enjoys making short films with a friend. "His sister likes to be in front of the camera. He loves to be behind it," Mrs. Nardozzi said.
Cosmo editors think Anthony should be in front of the camera, too.
The seventh annual bachelor issue "profiles some of the nation's sexiest single guys," magazine officials said Monday in a news release.
"In the November issue, the sexy singletons dish on what makes them unique, their top turn-ons and the female behavior they find baffling. Plus, readers will be able to contact their favorite guys directly via special e-mail addresses created by Cosmo."
"At Cosmo, there's nothing we love more than a group of super hotties with personalities to match," said Kate White, Cosmopolitan's editor-in-chief. "This year's Bachelors definitely fit that bill, and I predict that once the word gets out about these guys, they won't stay single for long!"
Mrs. Nardozzi said the idea to nominate Anthony came up while she and her daughter and their friend were flipping through Cosmo during a snowy day last February. Cristina said, "Mom, look at this! Let's nominate Anthony,'" Mrs. Nardozzi recalled.
Anthony had been in the spotlight before - for sports. He was a standout in outdoor track at both Seekonk High and Bridgewater State.
But Anthony doesn't seek out attention.
"He's a pretty humble kid," his mother said. "He has his awards, and lets us hang them up."
Anthony, who has never entered such a contest or done any modeling, backs that up. Cosmo called this summer to say he was their Massachusetts hunk.
"I think it is crazy, to be picked out of the whole state is pretty out there," Anthony said. "I was questioning myself. I thought it was a joke."
Asked what makes him unique, Anthony says he is a "very outgoing person. I like doing things that are fun." But he adds, "I'm a pretty down-to-earth person, pretty low-key."
Mrs. Nardozzi said she e-mailed 154 relatives and friends Monday urging them to vote for Anthony.
"We'll see what happens," she said. "It's fun and it's harmless."
