SEEKONK - A 25-year-old local man, who police say may have been speeding, died Saturday after his car hit a utility pole less than a quarter-mile from his home.
Police said David Coyle of 77 School St. was driving a 1998 GMC truck northbound on School Street at high speed when he crossed Route 6 and then crashed into a utility pole located at the beginning of Anthony Street around 4:51 a.m. Saturday.
The intersection is just two-tenths of a mile from Coyle's address.
Coyle suffered severe injuries in the crash, and Seekonk rescue personnel transported him to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Officials said no further information was available as of Saturday night.
Officer Shaun Kelley and Lt. David Dyson of the Seekonk Police responded to the accident. State police and the Seekonk Police Department are investigating the accident.
After two fatal accidents on Route 6 in just three days last fall, business owners and residents in Seekonk and Rehoboth said the state highway was a danger and needed to be addressed. Among the changes suggested were adding a traffic light or reducing the posted speed limit.
