Torrential rain, along with high winds, made for one wet and miserable night at Tozier Cassidy Field in Attleboro. But that didn't stop the Attleboro football team from trouncing Somerset High, 21-7. Game coverage, B1 (Staff photo by TOM MAGUIRE)
ATTLEBORO - Friday's stormy weather brought much-needed rain but also strong winds that Friday night downed trees and caused sporadic power failures in the Attleboro area.
A tree landed across High Street and Broadway in North Attleboro about 8:30 p.m., shutting down the road and causing a power outage.
The electric department and highway crews responded.
Over in Wrentham, a power outage was reported about 9:20 p.m. near the Wrentham Village Premium Outlet Mall on South Street. Nearby Berry Street and the Mobil gasoline/convenience store across South Street from the mall were affected, a public safety dispatcher said. National Grid was notified.
Plainville and Rehoboth reported several sporadic power outages. Taunton Street was affected in Plainville.
And in Foxboro, a tree branch fell at the junction of Granite and Green streets.
Area roadways were partially flooded as rain came down in downpours at times.
There were also a few area accidents that may have been related to the weather.
A man riding a bike at the intersection of North Main and Hayward streets in Attleboro was hit by a vehicle Friday afternoon about 4. He was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro with minor injuries and later released, officials said.
Just before 7 p.m., a 14-year-old boy was hit by a car at Carleton and Washington streets in South Attleboro, but he was not injured, police said.
Also, a three-vehicle crash at about 6:20 p.m. on East Washington Street near Epicycle in North Attleboro sent one person to Sturdy with minor injuries.
About an inch of rain came with the storm, which carried 30 to 40 mile per hour gusts. Thunder and lightning was also part of the mix in some areas.
The stormy weather is forecast to move out of the area this morning, with today and Sunday expected to be more days of unseasonably warm weather with sunny skies.
The heavy rains also forced at least the Canton at North Attleboro High School football contest to be postponed until 4 p.m. today. All other local high school football games went on, but North decided to cancel because the game was it's special homecoming event.
