GUEST COLUMN: Keep City of Attleboro on move

I ask for your vote for re-election to the Attleboro City Council. Attleboro is a city on the move! I want to continue to be a part of the healthy growth we as a city are experiencing.

I am proud of each of the projects the council has undertaken over the last four years. Every constituent who has come to me with an issue has received a full review and a voice on the council. I have personally examined and scrutinized each of the advancements along with their impacts upon the budget and our citizens' lives. Attleboro has been able to withstand budgetary challenges and make progress in many areas. Tough decisions were made to fix the problems of the past. We are not the city of four years ago.

I want this city to be one my four children will be proud to say they were raised in. I have worked alongside local citizens to make a difference in the community. I have helped to clean the Ten Mile River, served soup and dinners to the needy, sorted food for our local pantries and handed out flowers on 9/11. I have proudly stood representing Attleboro at many parades, local social events, and children's sporting events.

My 15-year old is on Attleboro High school basketball and softball teams and volunteers as a teacher aide at our church. My 13-year old is a member of the Triboro Youth Theater and the new Attleboro Youth Commission. My 11-year old knits scarves for the needy and plays SAGRA basketball. My toddler plays on our playgrounds. My wife is a volunteer member of the HEAT, Inc. fuel assistance program. We as a family serve refreshments at our church once a month. We believe in giving something back to our community to make it a better place.

So much is happening that Attleboro seems to change weekly. The list of accomplishments are numerous and all of the projects, large and small, are leading this city toward a new identity and a new phase of growth and prosperity: The Industrial Business Park roads and downtown streetscape are under construction, the Swank project is adding new jobs, new water lines are coming to downtown and South Attleboro, and city workers have received a well-deserved raise.

The Registry of Deeds has opened in the old post office and we have full-time staffing of the second rescue ambulance in South Attleboro.

Bristol Community College has grown to over 700 students.

The city has been recognized for its development and the forward thinking of our officials.

The election in November will bring changes to our council. Now, as we move this city forward, careful evaluation of each issue and each vote will be extremely important.

My participation and experience on the council will be essential in maintaining and continuing growth in the city. There is still much to do.

On Nov. 6 I will need your vote to continue my contributions. I am proud of my attendance these two terms and my dedication to the council, but most of all - proud to represent you.

Let's keep Attleboro progressing; it's a city on the move!

BRIAN F. KIRBY of Attleboro is a candidate for re-election as a city councilor at-large.
