Drag racing on Interstate 95 North is believed to be the cause of a fiery accident this morning that left the drivers of both cars dead.

State police told The Sun Chronicle that the two victims, a man and a woman believed to be in their 20s, were killed when their cars smashed into the concrete bridge abutment of Interstate 295 in Attleboro. The crash took place just before 11:30 a.m.

The cars, which witnesses said were racing along I-95 North reaching speeds of over 90 mph, somehow made contact and continued for about 200 yards before crashing into the I-295 bridge abutment and exploding into flames.

The identities of the two drivers has not yet been made public. Apparently there was no one else in either vehicle.
Attleboro police Detective Timothy Cook Sr. and Attleboro Patrolman Jospeh Enegren were the first officers to arrive at the scene.

"The vehicles were burning," Cook said. "We made an attempt to assist them out and then it more or less exploded. The vehicles were fully engulfed.

"There's no way we could have gotten them out of the car."

The crash forced police to shutdown Interstate 295 North as well as all but one lane of traffic on 95 North for a few hours. Attleboro police diverted the traffic from Route 123 onto Lathrop Road and West Street so it could go up North Avenue and back to I-95. Traffic along 95 North was backed up for several miles. Route 123 in Attleboro was also jammed throughout the day.

A second lane on I-95 North was reopened about 2 p.m.

Many large trucks in the traffic jam had to take illegal left turns onto Route 152 north because Route 123 leads to a low railroad bridge that the trucks could not fit under.

State police from Foxboro are holding a press conference now to discuss the accident. A Sun Chronicle reporter and photographer are at the scene.

We will update this story as details become available.
