Seekonk boys gain entry into tourney
SEEKONK - After falling behind early, the Seekonk High boys' soccer team secured a berth into the state tournament with a 3-1 victory over Bourne in a South Coast Conference match on Tuesday afternoon.
The Warriors began the season with a 1-4-1 record with the lone victory coming against Wareham. However, Seekonk then went 6-3-3 over the next 12 matches to earn the postseason berth. The team was also helped by a forfeit victory from one of its matches against New Bedford Voke, but still had to register five points in the last three matches, including a win over the Canalmen, to make the tournament.
"This was a huge win for us," said Seekonk coach Jeff Creamer, whose team completed the regular season with a 7-7-4 overall record and 6-6-4 mark in the conference. "It is a great accomplishment for the kids. And once you reach the tournament, anything can happen."
Bourne took a 1-0 lead in the first half on an unassisted goal by Tim Parsons, two minutes into the match. Seekonk tied the match at 1-1 on an unassisted goal by Mike DaSilva, 1:30 later.
In the second half, Norley Tabares scored an unassisted goal, 19 minutes into the session, to give the Warriors the lead for good at 2-1. Seekonk got some insurance when Nick Karas scored a goal, four minutes later, off an assist from DaSilva. Casey O'Brien made nine saves to record the victory in net for the Warriors.
"We set making the tournament as a goal at the beginning of the season and we have been in every game this year," said Creamer. "We have a young team and lost some close games. It was one of those things, we did not lose faith. The younger guys got experience and continued to improve. During the entire season, the older players did an outstanding job leading the team."
Norton 1, Ashland 1
NORTON - The Lancers turned a tie with the clockers into a second-place finish in the Tri-Valley League, Norton's highest-ever finish since joining the league.
Norton got on the board first with J.R. Cummings scoring a goal at the 27-minute mark. Brian Bettencourt assisted. Ashland then tied the game at the 63-minute mark. Ryan Kok had seven saves for the tournament-bound Lancers (10-3-5). |
