North residents have their say on police raid

North Attleboro police have broken up an alleged football betting ring involving town employees. The Sun Chronicle asked North Attleboro residents whether they thought police were right to pursue the investigation or whether their resources could be put to better use.

Following are some responses:

“That shocked me. I was surprised they went after them. They weren’t making any money off of it.” -- Normand Achin, North Attleboro

“Yes. I don’t think it’s right.” -- Stacey Melchionne, North Attleboro

“Sure, if they were doing something illegal. North Attleboro has enough problems as it is without them doing that.” -- Katherine Shunan, North Attleboro “Yes. If they were doing something wrong, they’re not above the law.” -- Karen Taylor, North Attleboro

“Not if it was contained.” -- Craig Hobson, North Attleboro

“Yeah, they should be arrested if they’re driving around and getting a bunch of people involved. That’s different than betting on sports in their house.” -- Brian Angevine, North Attleboro

" I'd bet anything that the police department plays the same football cards every week. What a joke. "

" To Ron - technically yes, those forms of gambling you mentioned are also illegal, although usually a complaint has to be filed. Not that any gambling is good, but usually with superbowl pools or "squares" all the money is distributed. There's no cut going to a certain entity. "

" First off, yes gambling is illegal. But, are the "squares pools" and fantasy football leagues that have prizes at the conclusion of the season the same thing? The case had to be investigated because someone registered a complaint. To me, the real story is who had the axe to grind that took these pictures and filed the complaint?? I know for a fact that it wasn't an upstanding citizen doing their moral duty. There is an underlying story to this that I'm sure is more interesting than these poor schlubs who got in trouble. Also, how bright is this whistle-blower? If in fact the football cards trace back to Federal Hill, why take the chance of retalliation? Maybe I saw too many Soprano episodes but I wouldn't take the chance. "

" Sorry about the strange post. The fact is that this form of gambling is illegal. It is not up to the police to debate the fairness of a law, they have to enforce it. People need to realize that these seemingly innocent football cards have been around for years. Trace through the organization far enough and it leads to organized crime. I remember in college telling a fellow member of the student newspaper that he could not use the office mailboxes to distribute his "for entertainment purposes only" cards as I did not want to be implicated. The cards are illegal and, with more state sanctioned gambling on the way, will remain so. "

" On another note, it is truely unfortunate for the peopel arrested in this as I am sure they never even gave any consideration as to wether it was illegal or not. Several lives will be turned upside down for something this silly. They should not have done it on taxpayers time, but this is like any other office pool and maybe the state legislature should look at wheteher law that makes this illegal should be changed. Our own governor wants to legalize casinos in the sate, but you can't have a football card for $20?? "

" Why would you even ask this question? The police departments responsibility is to investigate and arrest people who break the law. It is not to determine which laws "really matter" and enforce only those. If you do not think that this should have been pursued, bring it up with the people who make the laws, not the peopel who's job it is to enforce them. The places in the world where the police decide who will be arrested and what for are the same places where you would be grabbed out of your bed in the middle of the night and never heard from again for even voicing the comments made in this article. I do not necessarily agree with the law, but I do support the police and honestly feel for them, they probably know some of the people involved in this and it can not be easy having to arrest someone that you may have known for several years. "

" The question is "Why is gambling illegal?" Do we not have the freedom to take risk, and possibly fail? Or is it about people making income that the greedy government can't get their hands on? "
