Attleboro C team New Englands bound

ATTLEBORO - The Attleboro C Pop Warner football team captured the Hockomock League Division I Super Bowl championship and earned a berth in the New England Region Division I Playoffs with a 19-0 victory over Easton in the league title game last Sunday in Franklin.

It was the second consecutive Hockomock League crown for this group of players as they won the D-level league title a year ago.

Out of the 41 teams that began the season, only Attleboro and Easton were left standing at the end. The Wildcats of Easton entered the game with a 10-1 mark.

The Eagles now advance to the semifinals of the New England Region Division I Playoffs, where they will face the West Haven (Conn.) Steelers on Saturday at Noon at Community Field in North Attleboro.

The winner of the showdown between the Hockomock League and Connecticut State champions will advance to the regional championship game on Sunday, November 18. The title game began with Attleboro on offense. A pass from Brandon Clark to Tim Walsh got the Eagles off to a good start. The completion netted 30 yards for Attleboro with Walsh hauling the ball in through what seemed like the entire defense.

The Wildcats would key on Walsh all day long and this freed up the other Eagle weapons. The first half ended with Attleboro holding a 6-0 advantage. John Willard scored the touchdown and was set up by runs by Walsh and himself.

The Attleboro team came out and played physical football in the second half. The offensive line of Dave Duquette (three sacks on defense) Luke Morrison, Brandon Cheney, Zac Silva and Ryan Bowen did an excellent job against the Easton defense.

A great deal of Attleboro's success on offense could be attributed to its Power I formation. Andrew Wilkins and Thomas Burns lined up as twin fullbacks in front of Walsh and Willard with all the backs sharing the running duties.

Walsh and Willard ripped off gains of over four yards on almost every run. Willard finally broke one down the right side and took off on a 65-yard run which advanced the ball down to the Easton five-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Brandon Clark took the sneak into the end zone, giving the Eagles a 12-0 lead.

The Attleboro defense continued to stymie the Easton offense, forcing them to punt on more then half its possessions. The defensive line of Joe Dieratani, Bowen, Morrison, Antonio Taylor, Joe Russas, Max Lancaster, Even Mendler and Silva allowed the team to keep fresh legs in the game and continue to apply heat on the Easton running backs.

Thomas Burns, Drew Maguire,Willard, Jeremy Cokonis and Brandon Clark suffocated the Easton passing game with their blanket coverage.

With Duquette and Walsh shutting down the sweeps from their defensive end positions, Wilkins and Burns gave Easton no better luck attempting to run the ball up the middle, reading the counters and hitting the powerful Easton runners low and hard.

Willard scored another touchdown in the fourth quarter with Cokonis adding the extra point. Walsh was able to account for over 100 total yards of offense despite the face that the Easton defenders kept a close eye on him during every snap. Willard also gained over 100 yards with some outstanding carries.

As the fourth quarter began, the hard and tough lead blocking of Wilkins and Burns started to wear down the Easton defense. Cam Mielbye, Cam Perkins, Ryan Andrade, Danny Medeiros and Eric Pass led the way for the Gold Offense. After a rough start, these guys held it together and contributed to a total team victory.
