Driver faces fatality charge
Top Headlines Ryan M. Shaughnessy, 23, of Wrentham, was charged with motor vehicle homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol. The driver of the pickup, Alphonso Anderson, 71, of Brockton, was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident occurred about 1 a.m. Thursday on I-93 at the Route 138 off-ramp in Canton. Anderson was thrown from his Toyota pickup. Shaughnessy was treated for minor injuries at Caritas Norwood Hospital, then was taken to the state police barracks in Framingham. State police said Shaughnessey appeared to be heading south on I-93 when his 2001 Hyundai Tiburon hatchback struck Anderson's truck, causing the pickup to roll over. Interstate 93 South in Canton was shut down for about four hours after the accident, state police said. Stoughton District Court Judge Francis T. Crimmins Jr. ordered Shaughnessy held on $15,000 cash bail or $150,000 surety. He also ordered Shaughnessy to abstain from alcohol and from driving without a valid license. Prosecutors had requested bail be set at $25,000 and for Shaughnessy to abstain from alcohol, with mandatory testing. Defense attorney Robert Martin had asked that Shaughnessy be released on personal recognizance. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for Jan. 11.
