Foxboro murder suspect arrested
Top Headlines Luis Lopez, 24, was arrested without incident about 2:30 a.m. Thursday at his Cross Street home in connection with the murder of Carlos Gomez, Norfolk County District Attorney William Keating said. The bullet-riddled body of Gomez, 29, was discovered by a passing motorist shortly after 1 a.m. on Oct. 15. The body lay sprawled off the eastbound lane of Route 106 near Hampshire Street and the Interstate 95 underpass, police said. Lopez's arrest was the result of an extensive investigation by Foxboro police, and state police detectives assigned to Keating's office. He was arrested on a fugitive from justice warrant obtained by Massachusetts authorities late Wednesday night. Lopez was arraigned in Rhode Island and ordered held there without bail until a Nov. 21 status hearing, Keating spokesman David Traub said. Should Lopez decide at that time to waive rendition proceedings, he will likely be returned to Massachusetts within 10 days from the date of the waiver, Traub said. If he contests rendition, the process of obtaining a governor's warrant to force his return to face the murder charge in Massachusetts could take upwards of a month. At the time of his arrest, police had also obtained a search warrant for Lopez's residence and vehicle. Lopez may face additional charges in Rhode Island stemming from substances police allegedly found during the search, authorities said. The murder of Gomez was Foxboro's first in about a decade.
