MANSFIELD - When the runners toe the starting line at the Billy Kelly races, an element of mystery is always present for the top flight runners. Because the 5K and the five mile are simultaneously contested on the same course for a mile and a half, many of the competitors don't know who will be running which race or where potential rivals may lurk. That's the situation that developed Sunday when Attleboro's Kevin Gorman jumped into the lead of the 388 runners streaming out of the Mansfield Holiday Inn and appeared headed for a first place finish .... in either race.

Gorman chose the five mile winning in a course record 26:32 and Raynham's Amanda Kourtz won her third local race of the year with a 31:36 five mile effort. North Attleboro's Lynn Johnson won the women's 5K (18:55) and East Longmeadow's Michael Sullivan (17:02) took the men's 5K that Gorman abdicated.

Minutes into the race, four runners, Gorman, Attleboro's Chris Elgar and David Phipps and Foxboro's Sean Geary were running abreast on Forbes Blvd. and the prospect of a close race was shaping up. After a 5:12 first mile, Gorman opened a gap with Geary close behind, dropping Elgar into the second tier with the newly arrived Sullivan. Gorman kept expanding his lead and when he reached the 5K turnaround spot, he went straight, the five mile route. That suddenly made Geary the 5K leader but simultaneously gave Elgar and Sullivan a new beginning. "I had no idea who was doing what," said Sullivan. "When I saw him (Gorman) take off and I made the turn, I thought I had a chance."

That feeling was shared by Elgar. "I really thought I had a shot at it because I know the high school boy that was in front of me and just knew he wasn't going to hold that pace," the Canton High School cross country coach said. "No disrespect to him but I know his best high school times and I'm thinking to myself, 'He's not going to run a minute PR'".

Before the two mile mark, the duo pulled ahead but for Elgar it was short lived. "Just when I get into chase-him-down mode, this guy (Sullivan) goes by me," he said. "He just set a pace that I couldn't work with. It was frustrating; if I could work with him it could happen. I just fell apart." Sullivan, clad in ski cap and gloves on the cold morning, assumed the lead putting his imprimatur on the race. "I didn't know how much of a kick he (Elgar) would have left," he said. "Once we made the turn coming back, going downhill, I picked it up and I kinda knew I had it. I looked over my shoulder and knew he wasn't going to pass me." In the women's 5K, Johnson had an imaginary tow line attached to her good friend Jessica Blake, to drag her through a hard pace and a second place finish. "Internally I wanted to break 19," said Blake, a former North Attleboro resident. "We did. She's quick. She took me out in a 5:47. I don't know the last time I ran a 5:47 by myself. In the mile, even! She was thinking six minute pace so she was good. I didn't think I could run that fast but I wanted to run with her for as long as I could."

Johnson, who won the Billy Kelly Five Mile last year, was so dominant, she could attend to her friend's quest to place well. "She slowed down for me so we could finish together," said Blake. "I couldn't run any faster".

If the 5K runners were delighted with Gorman's distance choice, Zach Laidlaw, the five mile second place finisher wasn't. "I was hoping," the Walpole resident said. "He had 35 seconds on me through the 5K turnoff and I tried to close it. But man, he was cruising. It's hard to run by yourself but I was glad to have the 5K runners for extra motivation. I tried to close but when we hit the turnaround he had a minute on me."

Gorman, who won the recent Rome Blvd. Five Mile in Attleboro, was not letting up once he jettisoned the 5K crowd. "Because of the common start, I think that set a fast pace at the beginning especially running with those 5K guys," the Attleboro High School teacher said. "I wanted to stay up with them and use that pace to propel me through the second half of the five mile race. At that point I wanted to keep the intensity that we established in the first mile with the 5K runners so I worked hard. I was cognizant of falling behind the pace a little bit so I made an effort to push through those middle miles to keep the 5K pace up. I didn't fall off a ton so I was happy with that."

Kourtz was almost blas‚ about her race with perhaps Thanksgiving more on her mind. "I was just running with guys," she said. "My training partner ran today so I was trying to keep up with him. I wanted to get a turkey. They're giving away turkeys. I've been trying to break 30 but I haven't been able to do it."

Medfield High School student Kathryn Fetteroll couldn't overtake Kourtz but she may be looking ahead to Billy Kelly 2017. "I saw her and she was looking great," she said of Kourtz. "I knew I was way behind her and I don't think I can get anywhere close to her .." and then as an after thought " ... a few more years."
