NHS girls hoop coach fired

NORTON - Norton High School girls' basketball coach Tom Simms has been fired after one year at the helm. NHS Principal Raymond Dewar confirmed today that Simms was let go Tuesday. Dewar declined to say why. He said it was a confidential personnel matter.

"Coach Simms is no longer our basketball coach," Dewar said.

Under Simms, Norton last year finished 1-19, and 1-17 in the Tri-Valley League.

Last month, Simms rode his bicycle more than 1,000 miles over 16 days to raise money for the Cann Sisters Assistance Fund. The fund is helping Danielle and Brittany Cann, the Norton sisters who were critically injured in a domestic shooting that left their mother, Elizabeth, dead at the end of August.

"It was what I was supposed to do," Simms told The Sun Chronicle shortly after finishing his bicycle ride, which began in Orlando, Fla. "They're great kids, and everything is worth doing it."
