The other big winner at the 88th annual renewal of the rivalry was the NAHS Gridiron Club, which received a sizeable chunk of cash after Rocketeer booster club volunteers Steve and Lisa Courtney had the winning ticket for the $925 jackpot. And that was a story in itself as Steve, who sells the 50-50 raffle tickets, bought a handful of tickets with "70's" in the series - all in support for No. 70, his son, senior Brian Courtney, a tackle ... At the breakup dinner for Joe Reardon's Bishop Feehan High volleyball team, senior captain Kerin DeGirolamo of North Attleboro was tabbed the MVP and senior captain Kristen Walsh of Attleboro received the Unsung Player Award. Also honored were All-EAC pick Lysa Sim of Norton and Mass. Volleyball Coaches Association selections, juniors Amy Lepley of Norfolk and Jackie Atkinson of Foxboro. The captains selected for the 2008 squad were Jessica Nolan of Attleboro, Walsh, Lepley and Atkinson ... "Hopefully, it's a cyclical thing," said Dighton-Rehoboth High football coach Dave Driscoll of his Falcons who won just three games this season. The Falcon jayvees went 8-2 and the Falcon freshmen went 7-4 ... Three members of the North Attleboro High girls' soccer team are heading to New Jersey this weekend with the Maples Premier League Nova U-18 Club for a "showcase" tournament - Kaitlyn Hurd, Ashley Childers and Stephanie McGrath. The Ladies Kicker Club presented postseason awards to Hurd as the MVP-Midfield, Childers as the MVP-Defense and McGrath as the Team MVP ... If you happened to fan through Sports Illustrated last week, you might have seen where St. Edward High of Lakewood, Ohio, the school that Mike Redding's Mansfield High football team traveled to in September for a non-league game, has its boys' basketball team ranked No. 6 nationally, with one 6-8 forward going to Indiana and another 6-8 forward going to Michigan ... "I feel good about next year, we have a decent corps of guys," said North Attleboro High boys soccer coach Steve Santos of his defending Hockomock League champs, who will be led in 2008 by co-captains Sam Ocel, a midfielder, and Colin Flynn, a stopper ... Co-captains-elect for Neil Loew and his Bishop Feehan High golf team of 2008 will be Owen Lynch of East Providence and Bill Dailey of Foxboro ... "He's such a very good athlete for a tackle," North Attleboro High football coach Kurt Kummer praised the play of junior Mike D'Attillio, one of the hidden gems along the Rocketeer line. "He got bigger and stronger" and may move to guard next season ... Pereira and Mansfield High coach George Giannoloudis coordinated the Sun Chronicle All-Star Tournament and "everything went very well, the players, the coaches, even the college coaches there thought that it was excellent." ... "He'd start for any other team in the league, technically he's unbelievably good," said Mansfield High boys' soccer coach George Giannoloudis of junior goalkeeper Bryson Dowd, who will be starting in goal for the Hornets next season, unfortunately having to wait in the wings with Rob MacDonald, a three-year starter ahead of him ... Tri-captains-elect for Jeff Creamer's 2008 Seekonk High boys' soccer team will be junior stopper Paul Hindle and senior midfielders Nick Caron and Mike DaSilva ... Former North Attleboro High Red Rocketeer Tim Puopolo checked in over the Thanksgiving Day holiday about the Big Red-Attleboro High game, the Super Bowls etc. from Phoenix, where he lives and serves as an attorney for a consulting company. "I still follow NAHS as best I can via the Sun Chronicle online and the Rocketeers Web site - once a Rocketeer, always a Rocketeer. Lessons I learned from coaches Beaupre, Sullivan, Grant and Johnson still follow me today. Superintendent Rick Smith was my freshman coach - that shows my age!" ... URI senior swimmer Cherisa Friedlander, the former AHS Bombardier, clocked times of 2:17 in the 200 butterfly and 2:19 in the 200 IM in a tri-meet against Fordham and Duquesene. An environmental management major who has interned with Save the Bay, she will enter the Coast Guard upon graduation. And her brother Alan, a freshman at the U.S. Naval Academy, a bio-engineering major, was a member of the lightweight crew team, which recently took second place at UVirginia Regatta ...
