More NA candidates

NORTH ATTLEBORO - And then there were six.

There's no shortage of candidates for selectmen - with two more people taking out nomination papers this week. That makes six candidates for two seats if all candidates bring back their nomination papers.

Former Selectman David Chee and Mark Williamson, a human resources director for a long-term care facility in Dorchester, took out papers for the two seats this week.

In addition, incumbents William Moffit and Marjorie Kraskouskas and Representative Town Meeting member Bart Steele and garage owner Donald Achin have taken out papers for the seats.

If all six candidates return nomination papers, the town will have a preliminary election in February to narrow the field down to four. So far, none of the candidates have returned nomination papers. In addition to the board of selectmen, three other offices have enough candidates for contested races: the school committee, park commission and board of public works.

Incumbents Christopher Frost and James McKenna and newcomer Justin O'Donnell have taken out papers for two seats on the school committee.

Incumbents Timothy Coyle and Gary Berkley have both returned signed nomination papers for the two park commission seats, while former RTM member Joseph Lima Jr. has taken out papers but has not returned them yet.

For the three-year seat on the board of public works, incumbent Robert Norton has returned signed nomination papers, while developer Donald Corliss has taken out papers but has not yet returned them.

Only one office lacks a candidate: a three-year seat on the library board of trustees.

Other candidates are Christopher Sweet, who is running for re-election to the planning board; Paul Pinsonnault, who is running for a three-year term on the board of assessors; RTM member Jonathan Maslen, who is running for the board of health; Deborah Valente-Gildea, who is running for one of two seats on the board of library trustees; and Gail McKenna, who is running for a five-year seat on the housing authority.

Nomination papers will be available at the town's election office until Dec. 20 and must be returned with 25 signatures by 5 p.m. on Dec. 26.

The annual town election is scheduled for Tuesday, April 1.
