PATS NOTEBOOK: Same city, memories different for Belichick
BY MARK FARINELLA SUN CHRONICLE STAFF
BALTIMORE - It was a homecoming of sorts for Bill Belichick Monday night at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium, but as the Patriots' coach reminded reporters this past week, the venue was wrong.
"Memorial Stadium will always hold a special place for me because that's where I started," Belichick said of Baltimore's former stadium, now an empty lot surrounded by school buildings. "Going up there to 33rd Street to watch the Orioles and the Colts play, when you grow up, you kind of get weaned onto those two sports. That sticks with you for a lifetime, and it always will with me."
Belichick spent most of his young life in nearby Annapolis as his father, Steve, served as a long-time assistant football coach at the U.S. Naval Academy.
The Patriots' last visit to Baltimore, on the other hand, was in 1996, when the Ravens played in Memorial Stadium. Belichick had coached their predecessors, the Cleveland Browns, for five years prior to their move to Baltimore, and after his firing, he became the Patriots' secondary coach under Bill Parcells for a year.
The consolation of that trip: a 46-38 New England victory, one of 11 victories that led the Patriots to the playoffs and eventually to Super Bowl XXXI.
Belichick hadn't been in M&T Bank Stadium prior to Monday night except for the NCAA lacrosse championships earlier this year. He played lacrosse in high school.
"I haven't had an opportunity to come there for any football games," he told the Associated Press. "It will be good to come back, but on the other hand, it's really a business trip."
Quick kicks
The Patriots' inactives were Chad Jackson, Eugene Wilson, Eddie Jackson, Wesley Britt, Billy Yates, Troy Brown and Chad Brown, with Matt Gutierrez as the third quarterback... the Ravens' inactives were kicker Rhys Lloyd, running back Mike Anderson, safety Gerome Sapp, tackle Jared Gaither, tight end Todd Heap, wide receiver Demetrius Williams and defensive tackles Edgar Jones and Zarnell Fitch... Before the game, the Ravens placed oft-injured quarterback Steve McNair on injured reserve...
For the 12th time this year, the Patriots' defense did not allow an opposing score on their foes' first possession... Randy Moss' first catch (a 6-yarder) propelled him over the 1,100-yard mark for the season, making him the fifth Patriot in history to reach that plateau, following Stanley Morgan (1,491 in 1986), Troy Brown (1,119 in 2001), Ben Coates (1,174 in 1994) and Terry Glenn (1,132 in 1996)... Tom Brady's 3-yard touchdown pass to Moss in the third quarter made him the fourth NFL quarterback in history to throw 40 TD passes in a season... Moss tied his career high of 17 touchdowns in a season (1998 and 2003), and the TD catch was the 750th reception of his career, making him the 25th player in NFL history to reach that number... Stephen Gostkowski went over the 200-point mark for his career, 19th in Patriot history to achieve that... The M&T Bank Stadium crowd of 71,382 was a record for the decade-old stadium. |
