North facing busy election

NORTH ATTLEBORO - As new candidates continue to take out nomination papers, six out of the 10 offices on April's town election ballot could feature contested races.

Seats on the board of health and electric commission could now become contested races as the incumbents in both seats have now taken out papers.

For the three-year board of health, incumbent Susan Shaw and Representative Town Meeting member Jonathan Maslen have taken out nomination papers.

For the three-year seat on the electric commission, incumbent Edward Vandette and Mark Butler have taken out nomination papers.

Four other town offices also have enough candidates for contested races- the board of selectmen, school committee, board of public works and park commission. The selectmen's race is still garnering the most candidates with six individuals taking out nomination papers. Incumbents Marjorie Kraskouskas and William Moffitt, Representative Town Meeting member Bart Steele, garage owner Donald Achin, former selectman David Chee and finance committee member Mark Williamson have all taken out papers for the two seats.

If all six candidates return nomination papers, the town will have a preliminary election in February to narrow the field down to four. So far, only Moffitt has returned papers.

Incumbents Christopher Frost and James McKenna and Representative Town Meeting Member Charles Beale and newcomer Justin O'Donnell have also taken out papers for the two seats on the school committee.

For the three-year seat on the board of public works, incumbent Robert Norton has returned his signed nomination papers while developer Donald Corliss has taken out papers but has not yet returned them.

A fourth candidate has joined the race for two seats on the park commission. Scott LaFond, who ran unsuccessfully for the board last year, has taken out papers for the seats, joining incumbents Timothy Coyle and Gary Berkley and Joseph Lima.

Both Berkley and Coyle have returned signed nomination papers, making them official candidates for the seats.

Individuals who are currently running in uncontested races are incumbent Christopher Sweet, who is running for re-election to the planning board, incumbent Paul Pinsonnault, who is running for a three-year term on the board of assessors; and incumbent Gail McKenna, who is running for a five-year seat on the housing authority and incumbents Steven Nelson and Deborah Valente-Gildea, who are running for the two seats on the library board of trustees.

Nomination papers will be available at the town's election office until Dec. 20 and must be returned with 25 signatures by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26.

The annual town election is scheduled for Tuesday, April 1.
