Stab charge lands 4 in jail

ATTLEBORO - Four men were ordered held in jail without bail Monday on charges of assault with intent to murder in connection with the stabbing of a 23-year-old city man over the weekend.
Ronald Moore suffered a serious stab wound to the left shoulder about 2:15 a.m. Saturday, allegedly after he and two friends had quarreled with the suspects, prosecutors said.
He suffered a deep gash and was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, police said.
Rhode Island Hospital had no record for a patient with that name, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Moore told police he was grabbed by one of the suspects and pulled toward a car before he was stabbed on Carlon Street.
Moore told police he may have been attacked because he may have been mistaken for a Crips gang member, although he is not a member of a gang.
The suspects were stopped in a car on Olive Street shortly afterwards by Officer Gerald Larsen. He was assisted in arresting the men at gunpoint by officers Edward Gingras and Christopher Ulbrich.
Also involved in the investigation were Sgt. Wayne Bennett and Officer Larry Velino.
Police say they recovered a knife with a possible blood stain that was thrown from the car into a snowbank after the car was stopped.
Charged with assault with intent to murder and aggravated assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon were Jonathan D. Boutelle, 19, Evan Baker, 19, Steven M. Valentine Jr., 18, and Richard M. Terry, 20, all of Pawtucket, according to court records.
They are due back in court Wednesday for a dangerousness hearing during which prosecutors will ask the court to continue holding the defendants in jail without bail pending trial or for up to 90 days.
The stabbing occurred after the suspects allegedly went to Carlon Street looking for a woman. Moore and his friends knew the woman and went to a nearby home with the suspects but she was not around, police were told.
There was a quarrel between Moore and the suspects about gang affiliation before the stabbing occurred, Assistant District Attorney Jessica Lennon said.
Moore told police he had a bandana in his back pocket which the suspects may have mistaken for gang colors. Moore told police he could not remember the details of the conversation, according to court records.
Defense lawyers Suzanne Jardin and David Velesig argued that police were not being told the truth about the incident.
"We take these things with a grain of salt, but in this case it's a chunk of salt," Velesig said.
The defense lawyers said their clients have minor arrest records in Rhode Island and no record of arrests in Massachusetts. But the victim and his friends have criminal records, they argued.
They also argued that a police report about the incident names two different defendants as the person who committed the stabbing.
