Top Headlines Area fire departments are reporting numerous slips and falls, often with broken bones, from the icy, skating rink-like conditions on walkways, in parking lots and on roads. "There were a few slips and falls, a broken hip, broken bones," Attleboro Fire Department Capt. Alan Murrant said. Those incidents were reported Monday, and the broken bones included a wrist and leg. The injured were taken by city ambulance to Sturdy Memorial Hospital. Attleboro reported no serious motor vehicle accidents. "Everybody is driving nice and slow and careful," a police dispatcher said. A woman fell off Kelly Boulevard in North Attleboro early Monday night. She was taken to Sturdy as well. "We had a few who had falls," North Attleboro Fire Department Capt. Scott Meyer said. Meyer's advice: "Take it easy and have young kids" do the shoveling. A car plowed into a snowbank off Interstate 495 South at I-95 in Foxboro about 7 p.m. Monday but there were no injuries. Franklin reported several vehicles getting stuck in snowbanks. Many made the mistake of not shoveling Sunday when mild temperatures and rain made for slushy conditions following 5.5 inches of snow falling Sunday morning on top of 11 inches Thursday. While the snow was wet and heavy, it was even more difficult to deal with Monday as a cold front blew in overnight with mighty winds, freezing up that rain and melted snow. Sunday was only supposed to bring 1 to 3 inches of snow before changing over to freezing rain and rain. And the overnight winds, which were at times over 30 mph, were initially forecast for Sunday afternoon with heavy rains that didn't come. Flooding and also utility outages because of the wind and ice had been feared but fortunately didn't materialize. There was a report of arching wires off South Worcester Street near Eddy Street in Norton Monday night. Some found their car doors and locks frozen Monday morning and that could again be the case this morning as Monday night was forecast to have a low temperature of 14 degrees that was supposed to feel like 4, AccuWeather said. Today is expected to have a high of 33 degrees and be partly sunny, with a low of 18 tonight. Some snow is again headed for the area for Wednesday, but most of that is slated for nighttime and only up to an inch. Monday had a high temp of 38 degrees, the Attleboro Water Department reported. With nearly 17.5 inches of snow falling from the two major storms and two minor ones this month, this snow season is shaping up to be a white one as the Attleboro area has already surpassed last winter's 14.5 inches. Typical for December is 8 inches but last December a mere 1.5 inches fell during a winter when the largest storm was just 3.5 inches.

Not too long ago (less than 10 years) groups of kids with shovels would roam the neighborhoods looking to earn some money. I guess we're all so rich now the kids don't have to do that. " or
