Norton's bid for new post office nixed

NORTON - The town's post office is too small. There isn't much parking, and getting in and out of the lot is a nightmare.

Get used to it.

Selectmen don't like the size or location of the post office at 6 Taunton Ave., but they say officials in the United States Postal Service have told them the building is adequate to their needs, and thus they have no interest in moving to a new location.

The USPS has a long-term lease on the Taunton Avenue location from Wheaton College. Town Manager James Purcell said the lease is "dirt cheap," so the postal service has "no interest in moving."

When Wheaton President Ronald Crutcher outlined his plan for the college's expansion earlier this month, he said he envisions Wheaton turning the strip of land along Taunton Avenue that includes the post office into a retail and residential development. But it's unlikely that will happen before the post office's lease ends, years from now. Purcell pointed out that the postal service is insulated from political pressure because of its unique status as an independent government agency that's technically part of the executive branch of the federal government.

"From a pure business perspective, they have all the cards right now," he said. "They don't need to move it." Nor do they care about traffic flow at the post office, he said.

" If town officials in Norton seek to improve the accessibility of the US Post Office, perhaps they would prefer to offer the USPS an incentive to move, like providing them with an even cheaper but superior town-owned facility? After all, if they are truly concerned with the best possible postal service to the citizens of the town, shouldn't they be willing to commit town resources to making that happen rather than seek yet another wasteful federal cash infusion to have them relocate to a higher-rent facility?
