Wanted: Residents who are willing to serve town
Top Headlines There is one opening on the Elderly and Disabled Taxation Aid Fund Committee. Starting July 1, the Elderly and Disabled Taxation Aid Fund will provide assistance to eligible persons at least 60 or to the disabled who have difficulty meeting their property tax obligation. The fund will be created by soliciting voluntary donations through a special envelope inserted with the twice-a-year residential property tax bills. The committee has already established eligibility guidelines and has developed an application form and instructions, which will be available at the assessor's office, the treasurer's office, and the council on aging. Applications for assistance are due April 30. The five-member committee is comprised of the chairman of the board of assessors, the treasurer-collector and three community members appointed by selectmen. There are three seats for community residents on the Property Tax Work-Off Program Committee. This program, still in the development stages, will allow qualified persons older than 60 to provide services to the town in exchange for a credit of up to $750 on their property tax. In addition to the three residents appointed by the selectmen, the committee will include one person each from the assessor's and treasurer-collector's offices.
