Homeless vet faces break-in charges

ATTLEBORO - A homeless Army reservist was ordered jailed without bail Tuesday after pleading innocent to charges of breaking into a vacant city factory building and possession of illegal firearms.

Kieran Moore, 28, faces a dangerousness hearing Thursday in Attleboro District Court during which prosecutors will ask a judge to keep him in jail for up to 90 days or until his trial.

Moore was arrested inside the former Foster Building at 37 Union St. and is accused of starting a fire inside an old concrete safe, according to court records.

His lawyer, Suzanne Jardin of Norton, said Moore was an Army reservist who served in Bosnia in 2001 and in Iraq in 2003. She said he denied starting the fire.

But police allege Moore had soot on his face and in his nostrils that they said indicates someone who was close to the fire, according to court records. Police were dispatched to the building about 10:15 p.m. Monday, where police smelled smoke on the second floor and found smouldering material.

Moore was apprehended by Officer William Monterroso, and when he was frisked, police recovered a loaded .380-caliber handgun in a holster in his pants pocket.

Jardin said the handgun belonged to Moore's deceased father.

Monterroso was assisted by officers James Dufort, John Hynes, Keith Bussiere, and Keith Shepard.

Police were dispatched to the building after a snow plow driver clearing the parking lot spotted a suspicious man near the building.

Police arrived, and found broken glass on the sidewalk and a door believed to have been used to gain entry to the building, according to court records.

A state trooper and a police dog were called to the scene but discovered no one else inside after a search of the building.
