Doucette leads Lancers to 4th straight win
NORTON - Darren Doucette led three players in double figures with 26 points as the Norton High boys' basketball team won its fourth consecutive game, 74-50, over Millis in a Tri-Valley League contest on Friday night.
Doug Schlehuber also scored 16 points for the Lancers, while Chris Brooks contributed 13.
Norton jumped all over the Mohawks early in the game, taking a 17-point advantage following an impressive 30-13 surge in the first quarter. The Lancers outscored Millis 16-8 in the second quarter to take a 46-21 lead at the half. Norton then held a 57-34 lead after three quarters.
Along with four consecutive victories, the Lancers (7-4, 7-3 TVL) have now won five of their last six games. Norton will travel to Holliston for a league game on Monday night.
Mansfield 49, North Attleboro 34
NORTH ATTLEBORO - In Hockomock League play, North couldn't have played much better defensively through three quarters, but the Hornets put the Red Rocketeers away in the all-important fourth quarter, outscoring North by nine.
Mansfield led 6-5 after one quarter, but the two teams were knotted up at 16-all at the half. Despite being held to seven points in the third quarter, North was still within striking distance at 29-23.
"They have a number of guards and they're really tough to defend," said North coach Chris Perron. "For us, it was a good team effort, I can't complain with the way we played."
Hornet captain James McGrath had six of his team-high 13 points in the fourth quarter, while teammate Andrew Venter tossed in 11 points.
For North, Madison Brittingham hit for a game-high 14 points.
Mansfield (7-4, 6-3 league) hosts Stoughton Tuesday night while North Attleboro (2-8, 2-9) visits King Philip.
Franklin 71, King Philip 42
FRANKLIN - Ryan Spencer scored a season-high 21 points, including 16 in the first half, as the Panthers defeated the Warriors in a Hockomock League game.
Franklin held just a three-point advantage after the first quarter, 19-16, but outscored King Philip 23-8 in the second quarter to take an 18-point lead at the half, 42-24. The Panthers then led 54-30 after three quarters.
Spencer hit a game-high four three-pointers, while Matt Palazini also scored 10 points for Franklin, who improved to 8-3 overall and 6-3 in the league.
"We are playing well right now and finding ourselves," said Panther head coach Dean O'Connor, the former standout at Mansfield High. The Panthers will play East Boston in a non-league game on Monday before heading back into league competition next week.
Chad Perry led King Philip with 13 points. The Warriors (0-12, 0-8 league) will host North Attleboro on Tuesday night.
Dighton-Rehoboth 46, Old Rochester 42
MATTAPOISETT - The Falcons weathered the productivity of the Bulldogs' Jeff Rezendes (18 points), weathered a string of inaccuracies (9-for-19) at the free throw line during the second half and managed to hold on to victory in the South Coast Conference game.
Nate Koneski scored 12 points, while Jared Gregory scored 10 points as the Falcons (4-6, 4-5) won for the second straight outing, the first time this season.
Old Rochester took a one-point lead with three minutes left, but a basket by Nik Montanino regained the lead for D-R and Gregory then added a pair of free throws to create some breathing room for the Falcons.
The Falcons created a seven-point lead by intermission. The Falcons entertain arch-rival Seekonk Tuesday.
Cape Cod Tech 58, Tri-County 39
FRANKLIN - In Mayflower League action, the Cougars couldn't rebound from a slow start as they lost the second of back-to-back games.
Tri-County (3-6, 2-4 Mayflower) was coming off of a draining, 62-61 win over Blackstone Valley Tech Thursday night. And it was apparent that the Cougars were indeed drained as they were held to just six points in each of the first two quarters, Cape Cod Tech fashioning a 34-12 halftime lead in the process.
The Cougars found their stroke offensively in the second half, but by then it was too late.
"The first five minutes of the game we missed at least 12 layups. I think we were really fatigued from the battle we had (on Thursday)," said T-C coach Dave Wallace. "After those misses I think we started to really press on our shots. We needed to relax more and I told them that at the half. They also had a 6-foot-4 center that forced us to alter our shots."
Said 6-4 center was Cape Cod Tech's Derek Richmond, who not only was a defensive presence inside, but he also led all scorers with 18 points.
Tri-County had eight different players score, but none more than sophomore Andy McKay's seven points. The Cougars host Holbrook on Tuesday. |
