BASEBALL

Extra Innings, West Bridgewater is now taking registration for the following events: February Vacation Baseball Clinic: Extra Innings will be running it's annual February Vacation Baseball Clinic the week of Feb. 18-22. All phases of the game will be implemented into the clinic, which will be run by Josh White of Bridgewater State College. Clinic is 5 days and runs 8:30-12:30. Cost is $160/non-member and $130/member. Combined with a new Grand slam membership and clinic is free. Space is limited. Softball Hitting Clinic: Starting February 4th, and continuing for 4 consecutive Sundays, Extra Innings will be offering a Softball Hitting Clinic for girls ages 7 and up. Shauna Ferris of Mitchell College will conduct this four week clinic which will cover all the fundamentals of hitting. Ages 7-11 will start at 5:15 and ages 12+ will go at 6:45. Baseball Pitching and Catching Clinic: Josh White and Jon Lombardi of Bridgewater State College will run another Pitching and Catching Clinic starting Monday February 4th and continuing four consecutive Mondays. Clinic will focus on grip, balance, rotation, release etc. The clinic this past November sold out and another day was added to keep the numbers low. Ages 7-12 will start at 6:15 and ages 13+ will throw at 7:45. Registration is limited so register early. Boash Baseball offers training in all baseball skills and techniques for all ages in both individual and team sessions. An exhibition series for high school varsity teams will be held near Cooperstown in spring 2008. Tournaments for 13, 14U, 15U, 16U and 18U summer teams will be held Memorial Day weekend and during the summer. It is a great chance to visit the Hall of Fame and play some baseball.

2008 SMBUA Umpire School will be held on January 21 and 28 as well as February 4, 11 and 18 with the exam date being Feb. 25. The school will be held on each of those days at 7 p.m. The school will be held at the DYAA Field House, which is located at 225 Russells Mills Road in Dartmouth. The cost is $70 per person. Registration for Foxboro Youth Baseball/Softball this year will be held online at www.fybs.org or you can walk in at the American Legion, which is located at 8 Mechanic Street, on January 19 and 20, from 10 a.m. to Noon. If registering online, you have the option to pay your fees through "secure payment". Walk in registrations will include coach recruitment, general information and displays of online store items. Fees are as follows: (6-8 year olds $65); (9 -15s $90) and the family plan is $185 (excludes Babe Ruth 13-15's). First year players need birth certificate. Starting this year, all managers and coaches must be certified through Babe Ruth. All are encouraged to go online at www.baberuthcoaching.org. The cost of the course ($19.95) will be paid by Foxboro Youth Baseball/Softball. You may also sign up at registration for a bulk order of the courses. BASKETBALL

Foxboro Youth Basketball Association announces a one-day basketball tournament for 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade teams at the Mansfield SportsPlex. The 2008 Winter Burn One-Day Tourney for females will be on Saturday, February 2, while the males will play on February 9. Three games guaranteed, with officials and division champion t-shirts included. Cost is $195 by January 25, $225 after. Division play will be compacted so that you won't spend the entire day there. Division space is limited, so register early. Tournament benefits FYBA and your support is appreciated. The MPlex boasts four courts, concessions, restaurant and ample parking right on the Foxborough / Mansfield Town line. The Bay State Magic Youth Boys' Basketball program, entering its 10th year of operation, is holding its annual spring tryouts during February and December. The Silver Devils AAU basketball program announces the permanent relocation to the Mansfield SportsPlex.In addition to Coach Chad Silver's current U15 and U17 girls squads, the 2008 season features expansion to include five boys' teams and five girls' teams. According to Steve Schlehuber, coach of the U16/17 boys team, tryouts are to be held on Saturday, January 26. These will be open tryouts for male and female players in divisions U12, U13, U14, U15, and U16/17. Cost will be only $30.00. Attleboro YMCA has announced that it has been selected to host the NBA skills challenge. The challenge is the opportunity for local youngsters between the ages of 7 and 14 to participate in the event. This grassroots program provides boys and girls, competing separately, a free opportunity to showcase their excellence in the core basketball skill or dribbling, passing and shooting. The Skills Challenge is also intended to encourage youth participation in sport while promoting sportsmanship. The date of the challenge is Saturday, January 19. On that date, boys and girls ages seven and eight years old will take part at 11 a.m. Boys and Girls ages nine and 10 will participate at 12:30 p.m. with boys and girls ages 11 and 12 taking part at 2 p.m. Boys and girls ages 13 and 14 years old will participate at 3:30 p.m. Participants may register the day of the event and must bring a copy of their birth certificate and complete a registration/waiver form prior to the start of the competition. Champions from the Local Competition will have the opportunity to advance to one of 25 Regional Competitions occurring across the country in hopes of advancing to the National Finals in Orlando, Fla. New England Colonials International Basketball Club: Accepting applications for two overseas basketball tours for April school vacation; Colonials' Rovers tour, open to boys in 9th grade, will head to Ireland. Older Ambassadors team (boys in grade 10) will visit and play in Finland and Estonia. Boston Warriors AAU Boys Basketball organization has announced its 2008 spring tryouts. The Boston Warrior AAU Boys Basketball Program offers players of all talent level the possible opportunity to play competitive spring basketball. The size of each roster are kept manageable. The program offers at least five tournaments in the spring and tries to keep the price to play affordable.This year the organization will offer multiple teams from ages 10 and under (fourth grade) to 17 and under (11th grade). All the tryouts will be held at Waltham High School. Eastern Massachusetts Women's Lacrosse Umpire Association (EMWLUA) will hold classes to educate those candidates interested in becoming a lacrosse official for youth programs, middle schools, high schools, and colleges; classes are currently scheduled for February at the Governor's Academy in Byfield; Dean College in Franklin, Westwood High School, Weymouth High School and possibly at Framingham High School. SOFTBALL

North Attleboro Park and Recreation Department will once again be offering its Girls Recreation Softball League. This program is for girls who live in the Town of North Attleboro. Teams will be made up by the following grades: Kindergarten and first at Petti Field (Saturdays only; three weeks of instruction, three weeks of mini games). Grades 2 and 3: the games will be at North Attleboro High with two games a week. Grades 4 and 5: the games held at North Attleboro High with two games a week. Grades 6, 7 and 8: the games will be held at North Attleboro High with two games a week. Sorry, no request for team or coach placement will be honored. The cost for each player is $70 with kindergarten and first grade being $65. A tee-shirt is provided but participants are responsible for obtaining their own grey softball pants. The league is scheduled to start on April 19 and end in May. Anyone who is interested in coaching please contact the Recreation Office for information regarding the coaches meeting. Registration runs through Friday, February 15 at the Mason Field House. Space is very limited so please come down early to assure a spot in the league.
