Police say suspects broke into AHS for thrills
Top Headlines Four of the suspects were arraigned Tuesday in Attleboro District Court, where a judge scolded them, and threw one in the court's holding cell because he appeared to be laughing in court. "I don't think he's taking it too seriously," Judge James McGovern said after ordering a court officer to take Matthew T. Diomede, 18, into custody. Diomede, of 99 Hickory Road, spent about an hour in the court's basement holding cell with other prisoners before he was brought before the judge again. "Do you think this is a joke?" McGovern said. "No sir," Diomede replied. "If I was 18 and I was standing in front of a judge, I wouldn't think it was a joke," McGovern said before releasing Diomede. The court entered innocent pleas for Diomede and suspects Joseph M. Monast, 18, of 93 Hemlock Drive, Adam G. Martin, 18, of 65 Locust St., and Jason A. Peters, 19, of 236 Bishop St., who graduated last year. All face charges of breaking and entering and trespassing stemming from the incident around 1 a.m. Sunday. The suspects, and a 16-year-old juvenile whose name was not released because of his age, allegedly entered the school with a pass key Monast took from his mother, who works in the principal's office. No damage was found inside the school after police responded to an alarm and found the school empty. Police identified the suspects through security videotape. Monast and Peters are already on probation on charges of turfing lawns, authorities say, and face probation violation hearings. Monast and Diomede were also the victims of a carjacking July 27 in which the suspect was later fatally shot by police in Rhode Island after a wild and lengthy car chase. The two teens were forced out of Monast's sport utility vehicle when they were stopped by a knife-wielding woman about 12:40 a.m. on Oakhill Avenue near Locust Street, police said. The woman, Bridgett DeGrafft, 49, of Oakhill Avenue, who had a history of mental and alcohol problems, was fatally shot by police in Rhode Island after a high-speed chase on Interstate 95 that ended in Warwick, R.I. The teens are freed without bail and are due back in court at later dates for pretrial court hearings. The parents of all Attleboro High School students received an automated message from school officials Tuesday explaining the break-in, and saying the suspects will be severely punished.
