TAUNTON - Since losing their first two games of the season - to Hockomock League heavyweights King Philip and Franklin - the Coyle-Cassidy High ice hockey team has skated hard, gone to the net, turned the red light on with great regularity and, as a result, won 10 straight games.
The latest was a 6-0 rout of Bishop Feehan Saturday at the Aleixo Arena, claiming victory not only in the Eastern Athletic Conference game, but also the Reid Braga Memorial Cup, named in honor of the former Shamrock hockey coach.
Mario Ranalli and Nick Crugnale each netted pairs of goals for the Warriors (10-2) who deposited three, first-period goals past Shamrock goalie Tyler Holske and three more in the third period.
"They're strong, they're pure speed, they keep coming at you," related Bishop Feehan High coach Phil Hulbig, whose Shamrocks (9-3, 2-3 EAC) lost a 4-0 decision to the Warriors earlier this season in Raynham.
Coyle-Cassidy outshot the Shamrocks 9-4 in the first period and 12-2 in the third period, Holske finishing with 22 saves, while at the other end of the ice, Warrior netminder Tim Carey made 15 saves (nine during the second period) to earn the shutout.
In moving to within one victory of claiming an MIAA Tournament berth, Ranalli (at 3:13) and Crugnale (at 11:31) scored first period goals, then netted their second goals of the game in the third period within a minute of each other at 8:01 and 9:01 respectively.
Ranalli netted the game-winner for the Warriors on a cross out of the left wing, while Crugnale made it 2-0 on a rush out of the left corner. What subdued the Shamrocks was Coyle-Cassidy's No. 3 goal, a defensive miscue, a clearing pass winding up on the stick of Warrior Nick Mastromariano, who had a clean shot at Holske at 11:58.
"We were hoping for a closer score," added Hulbig, the Shamrocks going 0-for-3 on the powerplay.
Bishop Feehan won three of four faceoffs in the attacking zone in the first period, but only had three decent scoring chances - a drive by Devan Cornetta from the point and Evan McMorrow's ensuing stab of the rebound on the Shamrocks' first powerplay chance, then a partial breakaway bid by Jon Casali in the final minute.
Bishop Feehan held the Warriors scoreless during the second period and had a 9-7 edge in shots, senior center Jordan Davidner creating three terrific scoring chances. Davidner had a backhander in the first minute, a short jam shot on the Shamrocks' third powerplay, then a breakaway down the left wing in the 10th minute. Casali also had a drive off the right wing in the ninth minute.
However, the Warriors do not make mistakes in their own end of the ice and hasten the transition. The Warriors scored their trio of third period goals within a four-minute span, the Shamrocks not forcing even one faceoff in the attacking zone.
"We've gotten off base (offensively) the last couple of games," added Hulbig. "We worked hard, but you learn something about your hockey club in games like this."
The Shamrocks, in need of one victory to qualify for the MIAA Tournament, meet Bishop Stang Wednesday.
