Foxboro rallies past Canton
FOXBORO - After only scoring 17 points in the first half and trailing by 22 points, the Foxboro High School boys' basketball team looked like it was going to be blown off its home court by Hockomock League foe Canton.
The Warriors, though, weren't about to pack in, rallying for a 57-55 win Tuesday night as junior forward Francisco Alicea scored on a drive through Canton's defense with only 4.3 left in the game.
Alicea then intercepted a pass as time ran out in the game to preserve the come-from-behind win.
"I had three guys on me, but I knew I had a shot," said Alicea, who led the Warriors with 22 points. "We knew that we could come back. I'm thankful that my teammates had the confidence in me."
At halftime, Foxboro head coach C.J. Neely wasn't pleased with his team's effort as the 2-11 Bulldogs were ahead, 39-17.
"We didn't compete in the first half," he said. "We were non-existent and we didn't compete. They scored eight points on offensive rebounds. We had made stupid fouls, 94 feet away from the basket and that's not intelligent play."
Alicea was plagued by foul trouble in the first half, drawing most of the attention from the Canton defense and only scoring two points.
"He was getting double- and triple-teamed," said Neely. "Francisco has become a very good passer."
As hot as they were in the first half, the Bulldogs went ice cold in the third quarter, only managing six points.
Alicea stole the ball and went in for a lay-up as time ran out in the third quarter as the Warriors cut the margin to nine at 45-36 going into the fourth quarter. The junior then gave the Warriors their first lead of the game (46-45 with 5:28 left in the fourth) with a steal and a drive to the hoop.
With 1:26 left, Foxboro's Ali Mourtada stole the ball and then fed Joe Clagg for a basket to tie the score at 51-all.
Then, with 35 seconds remaining, Alicea was fouled while going to the going to the hoop, making his free throw to tie the score at 55. On his second miss, Foxboro's Ty Spencer came up with a key rebound with 28 seconds left, giving the Warriors one more chance at the game-winner.
"There was no question we were going to Francisco," said Neely. "I'm so proud of them for the way they came back. A weaker team would have just put the game as a loss."
Mourtada (13 points) also finished in double figures scoring for the 6-7 Warriors, who will host Franklin night. |
