Top Headlines Corey Saunders, 26, a Level 3 sex offender, was released from prison in December 2006 despite the efforts of prosecutors at the time to keep him behind bars as a sexually dangerous person, officials say. Saunders, who was arrested this week and has a history of having been sexually abused, himself, is in jail without bail pending a dangerousness hearing Feb. 7 in New Bedford District Court. Saunders, who is originally from New Bedford, sexually assaulted the South Attleboro boy over a period of about seven hours after he was placed in the foster home on an emergency basis by the state Department of Social Services. Saunders, who was 17 at the time, assaulted the victim on a couch before the boy's mother interrupted the assault, police said. Saunders was convicted in 2001 of attempted rape and indecent assault and battery on a child under 14. He was sentenced to four years in prison and was placed on probation for 12 years. Former Bristol County District Attorney Paul Walsh Jr.'s office petitioned to keep Saunders behind bars, but Superior Court Judge Richard Moses rejected the petition, authorities said. Three experts, two court-ordered and one hired by the prosecution, testified Saunders was dangerous. But an expert hired by the defense recommended he be released, officials said. Now Saunders is accused of sexually assaulting a 6-year-old boy in a second-floor reading room of the Pleasant School library in New Bedford while his mother was using a nearby computer, New Bedford police said. Saunders allegedly lured the boy to a secluded corner. The boy's mother did not know her son was being assaulted, police said. A librarian who became suspicious alerted the boy's mother and they called police when they learned what took place. Police found Saunders outside of a local homeless shelter a short time later. Police have surveillance video taken from inside the library, New Bedford police Lt. Jeffrey Silva said. "It is a tragedy that this took place. This incident dramatizes exactly why we have a Sexually Dangerous Persons protocol," Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter said today in a statement. "I cannot, however, comment on what the superior court judge did because I was not involved in that case, nor was my administration in any way," Sutter said. "It would be inappropriate for me to comment." Saunders is now charged with rape of a child by force, indecent assault, battery on a child under 14 and enticing a child. Saunders had apparently been living in the Boston area before returning to New Bedford, where police said he had been living in area shelters. He had registered with police as Level 3 sex offender as required by law. A Level 3 sex offender is considered by the state to be the most likely to commit sex crimes again. Sutter's office is seeking a dangerousness hearing because of the seriousness of the charges and the defendant's prior criminal record. "Given the defendant's record of being a convicted sexual predator and the horrendous allegations in this case, our office feels strongly a dangerousness hearing is warranted," Gregg Miliote, a spokesman for the district attorney's office, said today. If a judge rules that Saunders is a danger, he will be held in jail for up to 90 days without bail while the prosecution prepares for trial. Miliote said the prosecution will quickly prepare for the case to provide "justice for the victim's family and the community."

What I'm TRYING to say is that the death penalty is not an appropriate punishment for any kind of rape- it's YOU who has missed the point entirely. You have no right to attack me personally on such a low level- you took this completely out of context, totally not where I wanted to go with this. You make it sound as though I base my opinion solely on one man- I DON'T. I base it on COMMON SENSE- something you apparently don't have (remember, you attacked me first.) " bglass84 wrote on Feb 2, 2008 10:15 PM: " Is that all child sexual abuse is to you? Rape? Their lives are ruined forever! Mentally and physically, they will never be the same! Do you even have any children? I think you've missed the point entirely! If you had "bothered" to read what I first wrote I said they should be thankful to only get life without parole. THEY don't get life without parole! They get a few years in prison, THAT'S ALL!! Your hero, Corey Saunders, spent only 4 years in prison for sexually abusing a 7 year old boy for SEVEN hours!! His own mother turned him in to the police! I AM A CHILD ABUSE VICTIM! I will NEVER get over what happened to me. How dare you judge me? I know Rehab and programs are there, but did you even read in the article that Saunders DIDN'T even bother to complete them? That three psychologists said he was dangerous? By the way, rehab and programs DO NOT WORK FOR PEDOPHILES! Children are, and always will be their victims. I know this for a fact. I'm pleased that you have no problem with your sex offender neighbor because you deserve each other. " liss wrote on Feb 2, 2008 8:08 PM: " It's funny you should mention it- one of my neighbors is, in fact, a sex offender and you know what? I haven't had a damn problem with him. Prison and rehab can change people. That's what they are THERE for. That's WHY these people go. The death sentence is meant for people who kill others, and yeah I'm aware that these childrens lives will never be the same, but they still HAVE their lives. Eye for an eye, maybe, but life for a rape hardly seems necessary. " bglass84 wrote on Feb 2, 2008 6:13 PM: " Yes, the death sentence for child rapists. They ruin other innocent children's lives. Do you really think that children "get over" what happened to them? I believe THAT would be absolutely insane. I would love a chance to make changes in our justice system since there seems to be no justice! Of course, you seem to be the type who would perhaps give these poor souls a second chance. Why don't you invite the honorable Mr. Saunders to live next door to you?
" liss wrote on Feb 2, 2008 6:02 PM: " Death sentence for sex offense? I'm sorry but that is ridiculous. I'm not endorsing child rape but taking someones life for it is absolutely insane.
If you had actually took the time to read the story, you'd see that this New Bedford case is his second offense- meaning that when he was released from jail, HE WAS NOT A REPEAT OFFENDER.
If you think the justice system is out of whack, perhaps you could run it better all on your own? " bglass84 wrote on Feb 2, 2008 5:57 PM: " How could a repeated sex offender even be allowed out of jail in the first case? Pedophiles do not change! Their sex preference is children and will always be so. I don't care if this man, Corey Saunders, was sexually abused as a child. This should never be used as an excuse to sexually abuse other children. He, and all child molesters should never be allowed out of prison! There is no "cure" for these offenders. They will always prey on innocent children no matter how long they are in prison or in treatment programs. In my opinion, they should be thankful to only get life without parole and not the death sentence, which I believe is the right punishment.
