ATTLEBORO - Area police and fire officials responded to several auto accidents during icy conditions Friday, including one in North Attleboro in which a sport utility vehicle rolled over on its side forcing officials to close the road.
The driver, Maryann Shea, 58, of Millis, was traveling west on Plain Street when the accident occurred shortly before 9 a.m.
She was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital as a precaution, according to police and fire officials.
Her grandson, Andrew Walsh, 2, who was in the vehicle with her, was not hurt, officials said.
Firefighters had to cut open the roof of the Jeep Cherokee to free Shea from the vehicle.
The accident was under investigation by Officer Scott Wiener, but police say icy road conditions were a factor in the crash.
A town sander arrived after the accident to pour sand on the road, which was shut down for about a half-hour.
Temperatures this morning during the commuter hour hovered around freezing.
Later Friday, a car went out of control and rolled over about 11:30 a.m. on Route 120 near Fales Road Extension. One person was taken to Sturdy with minor injuries, and police had to close that road for about a half-hour, fire Capt. Jack White said.
In Mansfield, a man escaped serious injury when his car struck a guardrail on the Elm Street bridge around 6:45 a.m., Deputy Fire Chief James Puleo said.
The man, whose name was not immediately available, was taken to Sturdy.
The crash remained under investigation.
