ATTLEBORO - Ellen Sherman says her son's 2-year-old English bulldog, Cosmo, is still traumatized after being kidnapped from her home during a break-in last month.

The 60-pound pet dog was recovered last week in Pawtucket by Attleboro Police Detectives Jeffrey Peavey and Timothy Cook Sr., who followed a trail of leads and conducted surveillance outside a suspect's home.

"He was traumatized. He cries every time we leave the house," Sherman said Saturday. "Hopefully over time, that will disappear."

While Cosmo is safe again at home on Lafayette Street, the two brothers accused of stealing him are locked up and face felony larceny and breaking-and-entering charges.

Timothy Brown, 26, of 10 Lafayette St., Apt. 1, is being held at the police station on $5,000 cash bail. His younger brother, Raymond, 24, of 146 Carter Ave., in Pawtucket, is being held in Rhode Island as a fugitive.
"It's bad enough her house was broken into, but to steal a pet dog? That's part of somebody's family," said Peavey, whose co-workers are jokingly referring to him as the "pet detective" while praising him for his dogged pursuit of justice.

Sherman said she was dog-sitting Cosmo last month, and was devastated when she discovered him missing and that her house had been broken into.

"The fact that it wasn't my own dog made it worse. I'd gotten attached to him because he's such a lovable little guy," Sherman said.

Also taken in the break-in were a digital camera with photos of Cosmo on it and a digital picture frame, neither of which were recovered.

Sherman praised Peavey and Cook, and said she was surprised and happy when they showed up at her door with Cosmo.

"He started squealing. They make that kind of noise. He was happy," Sherman said.

The dog was named by her grandson, who named it after a fairy character on "The Fairly OddParents," the animated Nickelodeon show about a boy with two fairy godparents.

The suspects deny stealing the dog, and told police they bought the dog from an acquaintance in Attleboro.

But police said they have a witness who saw one of the men leave the Sherman residence with the dog and get into a sport utility vehicle.

In addition, police said they followed leads that led them to Raymond Brown's residence, from where the dog was recovered last Thursday.
Also involved in the investigation were officers Kevin Fuoco, Leo Fontaine, Keith Bussiere, Jermaine Patterson, Paul McCann and Detective Alex Aponte. Pawtucket police also assisted.

The Brown brothers were arrested Friday after Peavey obtained arrest warrants.

Timothy Brown was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Attleboro District Court. Raymond Brown's arraignment depends on when he waives rendition from Rhode Island.
