ATTLEBORO - Wind gusts were blamed for causing roof trusses to collapse Tuesday at a condominium under construction on Bliss Avenue near the Seekonk line, raining piles of lumber on the site.

The incident occurred about 1:30 p.m. at 65 Bliss Ave., off South Main Street. No one was injured.

"I was upstairs working on the computer when I heard this crash. It was like a rumble. It shook the whole house," said Sue Burgess, who lives across the street from the development.

"We just heard a big crash. We looked out the window to look. Everything just fell," said Stacy Zaros, who lives in the condominium adjacent to the 166-foot by 32-foot building under construction.

"They're so lucky," Zaros said of the workers.
"I thought someone was buried under those beams because a guy was unaccounted for. But then he popped up," said Zaros's boyfriend, Jake Green.

The condominium is being built by LAB Development of Pawtucket, whose owner, Ron Lariviere, arrived on the scene after being called about the collapse.

Lariviere blamed the incident on strong wind gusts, and said he was glad no one was hurt.

"It's just one of those things," he said.

Had anyone been hurt, Lariviere said, "We would have been devastated. This is just lumber."

The roof trusses, which were being lifted onto the building by a crane to workers on staging, fell inside the building. About half the building was unaffected by the incident.

The Taunton office of the National Weather Service said wind gusts were reported at up to 35 mph in the Attleboro area at the time.

Bill McDonough, assistant building inspector, said the trusses appeared to have been installed properly and said the high winds were responsible for the collapse.

"When one started to go with the high winds they all started to go. Like dominoes, exactly," McDonough said.

Police and city firefighters also responded to the scene.
Several years ago, a roof under construction on Route 1 collapsed in North Attleboro under similar circumstances, injuring several workers.
