Conway, Ferreira New England hurdles champs

BOSTON - Chris Conway was edged by the slimmest of margins at Monday's All-State Meet, finishing in second place by 5/1000 of a second.

On Friday night, the Bishop Feehan High senior wasn't going to be denied in the 55 meter hurdles... and for that matter neither was Mansfield High junior phenom Meghan Ferreira.

Conway promised his coach Paul Powell he'd do better and he delivered Friday night at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center, this time a record-shattering performance to take home first place while Ferreira had a record-setting effort of her own to make it dual New England Championship titles in the hurdles for the locals.

"He ran the race of his life," said Powell. "He was disappointed with the second-place finish Monday, but he wasn't wiped out. He had a we'll show 'em attitude and he did just that. From the start to the finish he did everything perfect."

Conway shattered his old school record of 7.58 seconds (set at the Eastern Athletic Conference Championships), running a New England-best 7.49 for first place. With the effort, Conway advances to the Nationals (Nike Invitational) in Maryland three weeks from today.

Ferreira also ran the race of her life as she dominated her race from the opening gun, running a school-record time of 8.24 seconds, breaking her previous mark of 8.36.

"She just got out of the blocks so smooth and really turned it on. I think she even shocked herself," said MHS coach Derek Ellis. "She's just having an unbelievable junior year. There was one girl seeded ahead of her at 8.28, but she just ran really calm and with confidence."

BISHOP FEEHAN'S Meg Looney was looking to repeat as New England champion in the 600 but had to settle for second place, her first indoor loss in over two years. The senior ran a 1:34.10, a better time than the one she ran Monday (1:34.35) to win the All-States and her second-best time of the season, but she was overtaken down the stretch by a runner from Coventry, R.I.

"She had the lead the entire race and just got edged out the last 50 meters," said Powell. "I think it was a combination of her having run last Saturday, then Monday (All-States), plus the relays, and everyone else having a couple of weeks off. I told her she had so many plaques on her wall that she was running out of room. But in all honesty, no one works harder than her and we're going to miss her."

Also for the Shamrock girls, the 4x400 relay team of Elaine Martin, Siobhan Devoy, Janelle McNeil and Looney took eighth place with their second-best time of the season (4:06.30).

Also for MANSFIELD, Ferreira ran the opening leg for the 4x400 relay team, which took home third place. She teamed with Emily Broyles, Katie Jenkins and Michelle Jensen to run a new school record 4:65. Jensen ran a 57.8 second split.

"Meghan got us to where we needed to be, Emily and Katie held it before Jensen chanced a couple of people down," said Ellis.

Shot putter Kelly McCabe was 22nd (34-4) after finishing fourth at the All-States Monday.

For the Hornet boys, the 4x400 relay team ended up runners-up in New England with a school-record time of 3:28.42. That foursome of J.D. Chalifoux, Kyle Kilduff, Powell Simpson and Matt Callanan was fresh off of breaking the school record at Monday's All-State Meet.

Mansfield also had senior Mike McPherson (56-6) and Dan Glavin (51-7) finish third and seventh respectively in the shot put. The 4x800 team of Peter Starke, Patrick Grimes, Chris Harney and Mike Bolea, coming into the meet seeded 11th, went 8:15.05 for a season-best time and ninth place.

Junior Nick Wade of NORTH ATTLEBORO eclipsed his old school record while finishing in fifth place in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:32:72. Wade bested his old mark of 5:32:77, which he set earlier this season. Wade will next compete in the 800 meters at the National Scholastic Indoor Track Championships at the Armory in New York City on March 14-16.

Junior Shannon Cunningham of FOXBORO established her second personal best in as many weeks in the 300 meters. She finished in eighth place in the event, running a time of 41.07 seconds.

DIGHTON-REHOBOTH standout Ashley Nunes set the school record once again as she placed sixth in the shot put. The junior, who was seeded 11th heading into the meet, uncorked a distance of 38-101/2 to break her old school record which she set in a meet against Apponequet (Jan. 16). Nunes started the season in the 33-34 feet range and consistently hit around 35-36 feet as the season progressed.

"She went over 38 the last two meets (All-States and New Englands), so she picked the right time," said D-R coach Mike Rubin.
