ATTLEBORO - The Mobil gas station in County Square is no longer charging its customers extra if they pay with a credit card, the store's manager said Thursday.
The station's manager, Dani Saliba, took down a note above the Mobil's sign on Thursday afternoon that had said the station charges customers "5¢ extra on credit."
Saliba took the sign down in response to a front-page article in Thursday's Sun Chronicle about a state law that makes it illegal to charge customers extra to pay with a credit card.
Customers came in throughout the day to question the policy after they read the report, he said.
According to Saliba, however, the station stopped adding the credit card surcharge months ago after customers complained about it. "I don't want to lose my customers," he said.
When asked why the Mobil station would leave a sign up for more than six months that listed higher prices than those actually charged, Saliba said his staff did not remember it was there.
"We forgot about it," he said. "We changed it (the policy), and we didn't even pay attention until today.' Saliba said.
"The customers came in today with the newspaper and told me, 'What are you doing?' "
