For brides, a walk in the park

ATTLEBORO - Almost a dozen brides have left a church in the lurch and plan to head down the aisle at the Hagopian Memorial Walk in Capron Park this year.
While the park has always been popular for weddings, the new stone path, accented with rose arbors and cherry trees and ending at a decorative gazebo, is in big demand from brides looking for an outdoor wedding and something different, a city official said.
Parks Department Administrator Heather Uriot told the park commission Wednesday the number of brides seeking to use the park for their weddings has increased dramatically this year because of the Hagopian Memorial Walk.
To date, 11 marriages, scheduled from April to October, have been booked at the walk, which honors Rose Hagopian and her late husband, Jack, for their years of philanthropy in the city.
The Hagopians had been married for 51 years when Jack died in 2003.
Another two marriages have been scheduled for 2009, Uriot said.
The first wedding at the walk took place last July between Keri Greenstein and Alan Kelley just after the walk was finished.
Uriot said the walk has also been used for a child's tea party and a baby shower.
There's no fee to use the walk, but donations are accepted for a fund that has been established to maintain the memorial.
For more information about using the walk for a wedding or to donate to the Hagopian Fund, Uriot can be reached at the Parks Department by calling 508-226-6487.
